‘He’s going to be a good one.’ Dos Palos quarterback ready to continue family legacy.
Peyton Van Worth grew up going to Dos Palos High School football games. His family has always been a part of the Broncos program.
His father Mike played quarterback and linebacker and helped lead Dos Palos to three Valley Championships when he wore a Broncos uniform. He’s in the school’s Hall of Fame.
Peyton’s grandfather Bill Van Worth was a longtime coach and athletic director at the school.
Peyton Van Worth will wear the same No. 5 jersey his father wore and start at quarterback as a junior for the Broncos this season.
“It’s awesome to play and wear my dad’s number,” Peyton said. “Dos Palos has so much tradition and it’s special with it being the 100th year of football at Dos Palos. It’s pretty special.”
The Broncos hope to keep the ball rolling after finishing 10-1 last season.
Peyton Van Worth was named an all-state baseball player this past spring by CalHiSports and now hopes to bring that success to the football field.
“Peyton was raised around football his whole life,” said Dos Palos coach Rob Calvert. “He’s a great student of the game, he’s very coachable and he’s got a great arm. He’s going to be a good one.”
The Broncos will have plenty of playmakers to help Van Worth with receivers Sixto Ibarra, Elias Esquivel and Jesus Bond to go along with running backs Mike Cantu, Drake Hennagan and Julio Garcia.
Calvert says the key to the Broncos success is the offensive line, which will be anchored by the trio of Adam Echavarria, Eric Henson and Caleb Jelen.
“We lost a lot of linemen so we have to rebuild there a bit,” Calvert said. “We have some big dudes who just don’t have a lot of experience yet. As long as we can protect Peyton we should be pretty good.”
The defense will be led by defensive end Felix Garcia and linebackers Garcia and Hernan Hernandez.
“We want to do better than last year,” Peyton Van Worth said. “I think we have a talented, all-around group. With the guys up front we can make plays.”
The Broncos definitely have high expectations after going 10-0 in the regular season last year. The Broncos want to make the 100th season special.
Dos Palos has won 672 games since 1923, which ranks third all time in the state, according to CalHiSports.
“Every year our goal is to win a Valley Championship,” Calvert said. “We want to win every game and get better every day. If we take it game by game, everything will take care of itself.”
