Roundup: Golden Valley shuts out El Capitan; Los Banos clinches share of WAC championship
Abraham Bautista threw two touchdown passes in his first start at quarterback to help lead the Golden Valley High football team to a 34-0 win over El Capitan at Merced College’s Stadium ‘76 on Friday night.
Bautista drew the start after staring quarterback Eleazar Garza injured his ankle in a loss to Patterson last week and is expected to miss two to three weeks.
Bautista started the scoring with a touchdown pass to receiver Delbert Davis and Bautista later connected with receiver Jonah White in the third quarter.
Cougars running back Jahkylle Smith added two rushing touchdowns and Ethain Vang returned an interception for a score as GV handed El Capitan its 20th consecutive loss.
Golden Valley will host Merced next week in the Battle for the Mayor’s Cup when the Cougars will try to snap a 16-game losing streak to their crosstown rivals.
Patterson 28, Buhach Colony 18
The Thunder fell short of upsetting the Tigers despite another stellar performance from star Jaxson Percoats.
Percoats returned an interception 55 yards in the first half to cut Patterson’s lead to 14-6.
The Tigers turned two BC interceptions into two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes of the first half to open up a 28-6 lead.
Percoats pulled the Thunder within 28-12 after breaking free for a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Caprice Calhoun added a 20-yard touchdown run late to cut the Patterson lead to 28-18, but the Thunder failed on the two-point conversion to make it a one-score game.
Los Banos 28, Lathrop 21
Tigers quarterback David Herrera connected with Kayson Welch on two touchdown passes, including the go-ahead 23-yard scoring strike that gave LB a 28-21 lead with with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter.
The win improves Los Banos to 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Tigers clinched at least a share of the WAC title with the win and can clinch the championship outright next week at Pacheco in the Crosstown Clash.
Herrera completed 9 of 12 passes for 127 yards. He also ran for 72 yards and a score.
Welch caught six passes for 113 yards and the two scores.
The Tigers defense received a key interception by Isaiah Medina in the second half and were led by Raymond Fernandez (13 tackles) and Jett Lindeman (11 tackles).
Pacheco 47, Beyer 20
The Panthers kept their WAC championship hopes alive with a victory as they improve to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the WAC.
Le Grand 37, Delhi 7
Bulldogs quarterback Julian Bucio threw three touchdowns, including two to receiver Ronnie Ramirez.
Ramirez finished with four catches for 101 yards and the two scores.
Reyes Diaz caught a Bucio pass and weaved his way through the Delhi defense for a 72-yard touchdown pass. Diaz also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score.
Le Grand (7-2 overall, 4-2 Southern League) will host Mariposa next week to close out the regular season.
Stone Ridge Christian 37, Big Valley Christian 6
Knights quarterback Noah Lund connected with tight end Max Friedman on two long touchdown passes and running back Hector Esquivez had a productive night on the ground.
Stone Ridge Christian improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the Central California Athletic Alliance.
Dos Palos 41, Firebaugh 21
Peyton Van Worth threw three touchdowns, including two to receiver Sixto Ibarra as the Broncos won their fifth consecutive game.
The win improves Dos Palos’ record to 5-4 overall and 4-0 in the West Sierra League and sets up a championship game at Coalinga next week.
Andre Flores added two touchdown runs and 75 yards rushing for Dos Palos.
Ibarra also recorded two sacks on defense.
