Buhach Colony, El Capitan girls water polo both open playoffs with victories
The Buhach Colony and El Capitan girls water polo teams cruised to victories in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday evening.
Macie Drum scored six goals and came with six steals to lead the No. 3 seeded Thunder (21-6) to a 12-3 win over No. 6 Oakdale at Buhach Colony High School.
Buhach Colony jumped out to a 7-1 lead by halftime and never looked back.
Abigail Gratton added three goals and seven steals, and Emma Ayala recorded six steals. Thunder goalie Abigail Perez stopped seven shots.
Buhach Colony will host No. 6 Ponderosa in the quarterfinals on Thursday, The Bruins defeated No. 11 Bear Creek 15 to 1 on Tuesday.
Fourth-seeded El Capitan was led by Kiryn Wicker’s five goals in an 18-2 win over No. 13 Beyer at El Capitan High School.
The Gauchos improved to 25-5 overall and will host No. 5 St. Francis, which defeated No. 12 Atwater 21-4.
Abby Fernandez added four goals and six steals for the Gauchos and Brooklyn Ramsey chipped in with five assists.
Golf
El Capitan freshman Esther Sheu advanced to the Northern California championships after winning a one-hole playoff at the Sac-Joaquin Masters Tournament on Monday at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.
Three teams and four indviduals qualified for the NorCal Regional Championships from the Section Masters Tournament.
Sheu shot a round of 70 to qualify for the playoffs as an individual.
Sheu defeated Rocklin’s Lexi Booras in the one-hole playoff.
Pleasant Grove, Granite Bay and Lodi were the three teams to qualify for the NorCal Regional Championship. The other three individuals to qualify were Nikki Chindavong (Rodriguez), Ashley Xu (Mountain House) and Saanyi Kotti (Folsom).
The NorCal Regional Championship will be held at the Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito on Monday, Nov. 7.
