Roundup: Buhach Colony, El Capitan girls both advance to section water polo semifinals
The Buhach Colony and El Capitan high school girls water polo teams are headed to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals.
Both the Thunder and Gauchos pulled out narrow one-goal victories in the quarterfinals on Thursday evening. The No. 3 seeded Buhach Colony defeated No. 6 Ponderosa 4-3 and No. 4 seed El Capitan defeated No. 5 St. Francis 8-7.
Buhach Colony opened up a 4-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter and held on despite a late charge by the Bruins.
Macie Drum and Kyley Abril both scored two goals each for the Thunder (22-6). Abril added five steals and teammate Sophia Ayala also came away with four steals.
Buhach Colony goalie Abigail Perez stopped eight shots and finished with four steals.
The Thunder will face No. 2 seed Del Oro in the semifinals on Tuesday. Del Oro defeated No. 7 Bella Vista 14-13.
El Capitan erased an early 2-0 deficit in the first quarter in their win against St. Frances. The Gauchos closed the deficit to 3-2 at the half and then took a a 6-5 lead after three quarters and held on for the 8-7 victory.
Abby Fernandez, Ellie Metcalf, Faith Miller and Kiryn Wicker all scored two goals each for the Gauchos (25-5). Brooklyn Ramsey recorded four assists for El Capitan and Fernandez added three steals.
Gauchos goalie Caitlin Battles turned away 10 shots in the cage.
El Capitan will face No. 1 seed Woodcreek in the semifinals on Tuesday.
