El Capitan senior breaks CCC record, Buhach Colony girls, Merced boys wrap up swim titles
El Capitan High School senior Rob Carpenter highlighted the 2023 Central California Conference Swimming Championships by breaking the conference record in the 50-yard freestyle.
Carpenter finished the race 21.18 seconds, breaking the record of 21.37 seconds set by former Merced High star Brett Fogelberg in 2013.
Carpenter also added a second individual victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.15 at the CCC Swimming Championships that were held at Buhach Colony High School on Saturday afternoon.
The CCC girls team championship came down to one point. Buhach Colony and El Capitan entered the league meet tied for first place. The Thunder edged out the Gauchos 538 to 537 to clinch the CCC championship.
The Merced boys distanced the field with 547 team points to win the CCC title.
Macie Drum led the Buhach Colony girls, capturing individual victories in the 50 freestyle (25.36) and the 100 freestyle (56.03) races. Abby Perez added a win in the 100 butterfly (1:07.53) and a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:28.78).
The Thunder girls also swept the three relays with victories in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
The Merced boys were led by Austin Lyons, who picked up individual wins in the 100 backstroke (59.81) and the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 321.25 points.
Merced’s Riley Rosa also won the 500 freestyle (5:09.35) and teammate Emilien Cortes Uranga finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.23).
Three other local swimmers won two events. El Capitan’s Chloe Dingeldein claimed victories in the 200 freestyle (2:03.23) and the 500 freestyle (5:28.07) events. Gauchos teammate Brooklyn Ramsey picked up wins in the 200 IM (2:23.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.62).
On the boys side, Buhach Colony’s Jacob Sotelo was a double-winner with victories in the 200 IM (59.75) and the 100 butterfly (54.23).
