‘I’m just so proud,’ El Capitan girls volleyball clinches third straight CCC championship

The El Capitan High School girls volleyball team wrapped up a third consecutive Central California Conference championship with a 3-1 victory over Golden Valley.

The Gauchos defeated the Cougars 25-10, 25-20, 20-25, 25-12 on Wednesday night at the Stable Center to finish the regular season with a 11-1 record in the CCC and 25-10 overall. Golden Valley dropped to 7-5 in the CCC and 9-15 overall.

El Capitan’s run to another championship was impressive considering the Gauchos returned only four players from last year and seven sophomores have been playing up on varsity.

“Words can’t express how proud of this team we all are,” said El Capitan coach Chela Moreno. “(With) only having 4 players coming back, the leadership of this team has made this possible with everyone taking pride on and off the court. This is a great way to start off the young talent we have for the upcoming years.”

Junior Chloe Grever led the way against Golden Valley, finishing with a team-high 19 kills and three blocks. Senior Felicity Parker added eight kills and sophomore setter Sophia Fernandez orchestrated the offense with 22 assists to go along with six digs and two aces.

Despite a young roster, this group still had the pressure of winning another CCC championship on their shoulders. El Capitan has posted a 33-3 record during their run on three consecutive championships.

“They were all so happy to be able to continue on the legacy of this program,” Moreno said. “Three CCC championships in a row is definitely not easy but our girls work ethic speaks volumes and I’m just so proud.”

Next up for the Gauchos will be the playoffs with the Sac-Joaquin Section scheduled to release the playoff brackets on Friday.
