Atwater High girls basketball advances to the section semifinals for first time since 1988

The Atwater High girls basketball team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals for the first time since winning the section championship in 1988.

The No. 6 seeded Falcons (24-6) outscored No. 3 Christian Brothers 17 to 7 in the fourth quarter to upset the CB 61-50 in the Division II quarterfinals on Friday night.

Atwater will face No. 2 Vanden on Monday night in the semifinals. The Vikings defeated No. 10 St. Francis 64-49 on Friday night.

Madi Hiler made 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter for the Falcons and finished with 10 points. Natalia Melgoza scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter for Atwater.

“Those two were huge because at that point it was a three-point game when they came through,” said Atwater coach JR Davis. “We were pressing so it was steal and go and Madi drove hard to the basket a few times and got fouled.”

Karissa Hukill led Atwater with 11 points and Jolie Hart added 10 points.

The Falcons will have quick turn around on Monday against a perennial section power in Vanden (23-7).

“They’re good, we have to be us,” Davis said. “As long as we’re us it’ll be a good game.”
