Roundup: Golden Valley picks up OT win over Los Banos; El Capitan routs Buhach Colony
Tyrrell Johnson scored two touchdowns, including a 1-yarder in overtime to help lift the Golden Valley High football team to a 27-21 victory over Los Banos at Loftin Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the Central California Conference.
Johnson also scored on a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that tied the game at 14-14.
Los Banos (2-7, 1-3) threw an interception on the first overtime possession that set up Johnson’s winning touchdown.
Yahir Zuniga caught two touchdowns for the Tigers.
El Capitan 42, Buhach Colony 2 — The Gauchos kept their playoff hopes alive as quarterback Gio Mendoza threw a pair of TDs and ran for another score.
El Capitan improved to 5-4 and 2-2 in the CCC.
Lorenzo Peters added two touchdowns and Elias Ruiz scored on a rushing touchdown and intercepted a pass on defense.
Pacheco 18, Grace Davis 14 — Peyton Mosely returned an interception for a touchdown and Joseph Valencia scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Brennan Watkins to lead the Panthers to a victory.
Pacheco improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Gustine 31, Stone Ridge Christian 23 — The Reds snapped the Knights’ seven-game winning streak in handing SRC its first Southern League loss.
Gustine improved to 4-5 and 2-3 SL. Stone Ridge Christian dropped to 7-2 and 5-1.
Delhi 27, Denair 20 — The Hawks defeated the Coyotes, which sets up an opportunity to make school history next week.
A win over Gustine would give Delhi (7-2, 4-1 SL) a share of its first football championship in school history.
Le Grand 42, Yosemite 20 — Miguel Moreno hauled in three touchdown passes from Diego Martinez and Johnathan Benavidez scored three rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs defense set up two scores with turnovers and Le Grand special teams set up short fields with three long returns.
Le Grand improved to 2-5 overall.
Mariposa 35, Waterford 19 — Rusty Bull had a busy night for the Grizzlies, rushing for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Bull also recorded a sack and forced a fumble on defense.
Laten Butler added a touchdown run and a TD pass for Mariposa (2-7, 1-4 SL).
Isac Munoz produced a pick-six for a Grizzlies defense that recorded six sacks on the night.
Dos Palos 27, Firebaugh 20 — Broncos running back Andre Flores rushed for three touchdowns to set up a West Sierra Showdown next week.
Dos Palos (5-3, 4-0 WSL) will travel to Coalinga (9-0, 4-0) with the league championship on the line.
Chowchilla 49, Caruthers 13 — The Tribe clinched at least a share of its second consecutive Northwest Sequoia League championship.
Chowchilla quarterback Davian Stephenson rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two scores, including an 88-yard touchdown pass to Khaled Escheik.
Dwayne Hemphill added two touchdown runs and returned an interception on defense for a 28-yard TD.
The Tribe can win the league championship outright next week against Liberty.
