Roundup: Golden Valley High football plays spoiler with shutout win against El Capitan
Golden Valley High running back Tyrrell Johnson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter as Golden Valley ended the season with a 7-0 win over El Capitan at Merced College’s Stadium ‘76.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half before the Cougars (4-6 overall 3-2 Central California Conference) put together the only scoring drive of the game.
The Cougars’ victory likely spoils the playoff hopes for El Capitan (5-5, 2-3). The Gauchos were trying to earn their first playoff appearance since the school opened in 2013.
The five wins under first-year coach Xavier Ramirez is the most in a season for El Capitan.
Merced 55, Buhach Colony 13 — The Bears (7-3, 5-0) clinch the outright CCC championship with the lopsided victory.
Merced jumped out to a 41-7 lead at the half, scoring touchdowns on all six possessions in the first two quarters.
Adarius Morales-Saetern and Cammarri Jackson scored two touchdowns for the Bears.
Bears head coach Rob Scheidt moves one win away from career win No. 200 with the victory.
The Thunder finish 0-10 for the second consecutive season and the losing streak sits at 21 in a row heading into next year.
Atwater 50, Los Banos 26 — Seneca Ybarra II hauled in two touchdowns and teammate Durrell Morrison scored on two long touchdown runs for the Falcons (8-2, 5-1 CCC).
Ybarra scored on a 38-yard touchdown pass from James Bell and added a 33-yard touchdown reception from AJ Banks.
Morrison scored on runs of 43 and 61 yards. Banks and Jeremiah De La Rosa added rushing touchdowns for the Falcons.
Los Banos quarterback Donovan Verducci-Greer threw three touchdowns for the Tigers (2-8, 1-4).
Livingston 13, Pacheco 7 — The Wolves won in double overtime as Mathias Valencia forced a fumble and Miguel Hernandez scooped up the ball and ran 76 yards for the walk-off touchdown.
Livingston (5-5, 4-3 Western Athletic Conference) tied the game at 7-7 on a 1-yard TD run by Jose Lozada in the third quarter.
Both teams turned the ball over on downs in the first overtime period, which set the stage for the dramatic finish.
Delhi 24, Gustine 21 — The Hawks clinched a share of their first Southern League championship since the school opened in 1998.
Delhi (8-2) finished tied atop the SL with Stone Ridge Christian.
Mariposa 28, Le Grand 20 — Rusty Bull scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 61-yard run that gave the Grizzlies the lead with 3 minutes left in the 16th annual Green & Gold Bowl.
Laten Butler carried the ball 17 times for 121 yards and two TDs for the Grizzlies (3-7, 2-4 SL).
The Mariposa defense registered seven sacks, including three from Connor Filgas and 2.5 from Karl Wall. Mason Sinclair intercepted a pass in the end zone late to preserve the victory.
Le Grand quarterback Diego Martinez scored two rushing touchdowns and connected with Miguel Moreno for a 26-yard scoring strike.
Stone Ridge Christian 10, San Rafael 9 — Tristan Quiralte hauled in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Gray with 2 minutes left to lift the Knights to a victory.
Vinnie Tome blocked an extra point for the Knights that ultimately proved to be the difference.
Stone Ridge Christian finished the regular season with an 8-2 record.
Chowchilla 63, Liberty 42 — Tribe quarterback Davian Stephenson had four rushing touchdowns to tie the school record of 22 rushing touchdowns in a season.
Chowchilla finished an undefeated 6-0 run through the Northwest Sequoia League for the second straight year, finishing the regular season 9-1.
Stephenson tied the record held by former Chowchilla star Caleb Hale, which was set in 2005.
Travis Selby added touchdown catches of 65 and 52 yards and a 22-yard touchdown run for Chowchilla. Dwayne Hemphill scored on runs of 4 and 15 yards.
Coalinga 17, Dos Palos 14 — A blocked punt help set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Noah Tasi late in the fourth quarter as the Horned Toads won the West Sierra League championship.
Special teams played a big role in the title game as Coalinga’s Dylan Teixeira returned a punt 70 yard for a score that gave the Horned Toads (10-0, 5-0) a 10-7 lead in the third quarter.
Jacquez Jones had given Dos Palos (6-4, 4-1) a 14-10 lead with a 53-yard touchdown catch midway through the third quarter. Broncos quarterback Earl Riley threw for 186 yards and two scores.
