Stone Ridge Christian High announced Friday that it is forfeiting Saturday’s CIF state NorCal Division VI match against San Francisco Waldorf because of a transgender player.

Stone Ridge Christian is located in Merced in Central California and has a pre-K through 12th-grade student enrollment of about 450, according to U.S. News & World Report’s database.

Stone Ridge Christian administrator Julie Fagundes issued a statement in a news release:

“At SRC, we believe God’s Word is authoritative and infallible. It is Truth. And as Genesis makes clear, God wonderfully and immutably created each person as male or female.

“We do not believe sex is changeable and we do not intend to participate in events that send a different message. We also have a duty and responsibility to care for the health and safety of our athletes. So after consulting with our students, coaches, and staff, we have made the difficult decision to forfeit Saturday’s game. Standing for Biblical truth means more than the outcome of a game.”

No. 4 Stone Ridge Christian opened the state regional playoffs by defeating North Hills Christian in a sweep.

Top-seed San Francisco Waldorf received a bye after going 21-3 overall.

Stone Ridge Christian went 20-12 and finished second in the Southern League at 12-2.

The Knights lost to Vacaville Christian in four sets in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division 6 championship match.

“This is a heartbreaking end to our season,” Fagundes said. “But I hope you will join me in congratulating these outstanding student-athletes. SRC is proud of them.”
