Another Merced-area high school basketball star has made history this season.

First, it was Merced High’s Averie Steverson surpassing 1,000 career points.

Now, El Capitan High’s Mady Dietz has done it, too.

The talented senior surpassed 1,000 career points with a 19-point performance Monday night. The effort came as the Gauchos cruised to a 63-23 victory over Manteca on the first day of the Tom Hawkins Tracy Breakfast Lions Tournament.

Dietz’s teammates stormed the court to celebrate after she scored the milestone basket, according to Shawn Jansen of the Merced Union High School District.

“It was a cool moment,” Dietz told Jansen. “Everyone came together to help me reach that big goal. So it was amazing. I was super excited because all the hard work just kind of paid off, and it’s just a super cool moment that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I really hope that a lot of other girls follow in my footsteps, and hit that 1,000-mark too, one day.”

Dietz became the first player in El Capitan’s girls basketball program to reach the milestone.

“It was special to see, because I’ve had the pleasure of getting to coach her the last four years,” El Capitan High coach Adam Her told Jansen. “I’ve got to see her put in the work almost every step of the way. It’s a big accomplishment, getting to watch her do it at the varsity level, and also she’s the first one to do it in program history. So it was super amazing to see that.”

Dietz also plays girls flag football, golf and will run track for the Gauchos, Jansen said. She’s also involved in FFA competitions.

Steverson and Dietz were both nominated as two of the area’s players to watch this season by their coaches.
