Merced High claims outright CCC boys basketball title

The Merced High boys basketball team is the champion of the Central California Conference.

The Bears earned the outright title Friday night with an 80-42 win over Golden Valley and Atwater’s one-point loss to Buhach Colony, 42-41.

Things went exactly the Bears’ way on Friday, as they have for much of the season.

Merced finished the regular season at 9-1 in the CCC and 20-8 overall.

Atwater finished 8-2 in the CCC. The Falcons put themselves into position to share the CCC title with a win over Merced on Wednesday, but couldn’t defeat their crosstown rival on Friday.

Next up for both the Bears and the Falcons is the postseason.

The section will announce playoff brackets Saturday. The Modesto Bee’s Quinton Hamilton and The Sacramento Bee’s Joe Davidson will join the section’s Will DeBoard for a selection show at 1 p.m. at the section website, cifsjs.org.

Here are the final CCC standings:

  • Merced 9-1
  • Atwater 8-2
  • Buhach Colony 7-3
  • El Capitan 2-8
  • Los Banos 2-8
  • Golden Valley 2-8
