Los Banos High wrestler Angelina Borelli’s dream of winning a CIF State Wrestling Championship came up just short.
Borelli, the top seed at 125 pounds, lost in the championship match on Saturday night.
Third-seeded Me`kala James of Central East (Fresno) claimed the state title, defeating Borelli in the title match 9-2 at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield.
It was a disappointing end to a great state tournament for Borelli.
She pinned her first two opponents on Thursday, then cruised past eighth-seeded Mia Hooper of Northview (Covina) 11-4 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
In her first match Saturday, Borelli faced sophomore AlexaAndrea Corona of Monache High (Porterville) in the semifinals and dominated that match, too, winning 15-3.
Borelli, ranked third nationally, won the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championship in Stockton a week earlier to stamp her ticket to the state tournament.
