El Capitan baseball, Merced softball in prime position to claim CCC titles

The El Capitan High baseball team is running away with the Central California Conference.

The Gauchos are 8-1 and two games ahead of second-place Atwater (6-3) with three games slated against Golden Valley (1-8) this week.

El Capitan (15-7 overall) has outscored its CCC opposition 78-21 so far.

The Gauchos have six games left in the regular season. After the three-game series this week against Golden Valley, El Capitan finishes with a three-game series against Los Banos.

Merced High softball in the driver’s seat

The Merced High softball team is in great position to claim the CCC championship with two wins last week, including a thrilling 2-1 win over second-place Atwater. Merced senior Madi Cabral drove in the tying run, then scored the winning run in the fourth inning.

The Bears are 4-0 and have outscored their CCC opponents 36-2.

Merced plays two road games this week, against 1-3 El Capitan on Tuesday and 2-3 Los Banos on Thursday.

UC Merced track and field records

Two UC Merced track and field athletes set program records at two events over the weekend, the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific and Leopard Invitational hosted by La Verne.

UC Merced’s Martel Fields won the 200 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational in 21.08 seconds. Earlier in the meet, Fields broke his own 100 meters dash school record with a time of 10.40 seconds in the prelims.

Leslie Aquino broke her own program records in the 800 meters with a time of 2 hours, 18.05 seconds and the 1,500 meters in 4:43.31 at the Bryan Clay.

UC Merced will next compete in the Central Calfiornia Athletic Association championships April 30-May 2 at Cal State San Marcos.

Merced High boys tennis success

The Merced High boys tennis team completed an undefeated season to claim the league title at the CCC championships last week.

The boys singles championship featured two Merced players, with James Tetangco defeating teammate Ian Hansford. Merced’s Alejandro Martinez and Parth Mishra won the doubles championship.
