Merced County track and field athletes qualify for state championships
The 106th CIF State Track and Field Championships are being held this weekend in Clovis, and several Merced County high school athletes will participate after qualifying at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet last weekend.
The two-day state meet is being held at Buhchanan High on Friday (preliminaries) and Saturday (finals).
Buhach Colony had an outstanding result at the Masters meet, with four athletes qualifying for the state championships, according to the Merced Union High School District’s Shawn Jansen.
Here are some the Merced County athletes who qualified for the state meet:
- Buhach Colony senior Taylor Martin will be running three events at the state championships. She was an at-large qualifier with a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters. She also qualified by finishing strong in two relays: third in the 4x100 and second in the 4x400 relays.
- Buhach Colony sophomore Emily Gallegos won the 300-meter hurdles and is seeded seventh in the state.
- Buhach Colony freshman Alicia Silvas also had an impressive showing in the 300 hurdles, finishing sixth. Silvas, Chisa Wood, Gallegos and Martin then reached the podium twice in relays, finishing third in the 4x100 and second in the 4x400.
- Atwater junior thrower Juliana Prado finished third in the discus to earn a berth to the state meet.
