Le Grand softball advances to NorCal semifinals; El Capitan baseball loses close one
The Le Grand High School softball team’s postseason dominance continued on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the CIF Northern California regionals.
The second-seeded Bulldogs routed visiting Justin-Siena of Napa 10-0 in six innings to reach the Division 5 semifinals. The game ended after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Le Grand has outscored its four postseason opponents 51-2.
The Bulldogs limited Justin-Siena to just two hits.
Le Grand will host either third-seeded Durham of Chico or sixth-seeded Lowell of San Francisco on Thursday at 4 p.m., with a trip to the championship game on the line.
Top-seeded Notre Dame of Belmont and fourth-seeded Moreau Catholic of Hayward are playing in the other semifinal.
Le Grand (20-7 overall) won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division 7 championship as the top seed. The Bulldogs won the Southern League championship at 12-0.
El Capitan baseball’s season comes to an end
The El Capitan baseball team’s remarkable season came to an end Tuesday when the Gauchos lost to Alameda 5-4 in the NorCal Division 3 tournament.
Sixth-seeded El Capitan took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but third-seeded Alameda rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Gauchos outhit the Hornets 8-5.
El Capitan finished 25-9, was the section runner-up in Division 3 and claimed the Central California Conference championship at 14-1.
