Prep Roundup: El Capitan water polo teams sweep Los Banos
The El Capitan boys and girls water polo teams are each closing in on a second straight perfect run through the Western Athletic Conference.
Both teams improved their records to 5-0 in the WAC with wins over Los Banos on Thursday evening.
The girls defeated the Tigers 12-4 behind Hope Stokes’ four goals. Madison Nolen added two goals and two assists for El Capitan and Metztli Enriquez scored three times.
The boys team steamrolled Los Banos 19-5 as Steven Koenig scored four goals and assisted on two others. Evan Spiva added three goals, six assists and three steals for the Gauchos (15-4).
Volleyball
Le Grand 3, Delhi 1 in Delhi – Joanna Perez finished with 11 kills and three blocks, and Katie Farnsworth recorded 26 digs and 10 aces as the Bulldogs defeated the Hawks 25-17, 25-5, 21-25, 25-20.
Stone Ridge Christian 3, Brookside Christian 0 in Merced – Justine DeJager and Alexis Louters each served up six aces to help Stone Ridge Christian (9-2, 6-1 Central California Athletic Alliance) pick up a 25-5, 25-7, 25-6 victory.
Boys water polo
Turlock 16, Buhach Colony 7 in Atwater – Zach Fookes scored three goals and Tristan Howard added one goal and three steals in the Thunder’s loss. Goalie Daniel Navarro turned away 12 shots.
Merced 12, Atwater 9 in Merced – Abraham Santana scored four goals and assisted on four others as the Bears remained unbeaten in the CCC at 7-0. Connor Norton scored six goals for the Falcons.
Golden Valley 8, Pitman 4 in Turlock – Angus McCleod scored four goals and Cody Costa racked up 19 saves as the Cougars improved to 2-5 in the CCC.
Girls water polo
Turlock 10, Buhach Colony 5 in Atwater – Gwynne McBride scored two goals, assisted on three others and recorded eight steals for the Thunder.
Atwater 10, Merced 9 in Merced – Kathryn Elgin scored six goals for Bears, who dropped a game behind Golden Valley in the CCC standings at 5-2.
Golden Valley 12, Pitman 3 in Turlock – The Cougars (6-1 CCC) rebounded from their loss at Turlock behind Grace Mello’s five goals and seven steals. Sky Syr added four steals and 10 saves for GV.
Boys soccer
Merced 2, Buhach Colony 2 in Merced – David Ortiz-Sanchez and Angel Hernandez scored goals for the Thunder, who tied the Bears for the second time this season. Alfred Flores and Andrue Orellana each scored for Merced (8-5-7, 3-4-4 Central California Conference).
Girls golf
Buhach Colony 237, Atwater 272 in Atwater – Tianna Lee (42) and Maddie Freitas (43) helped the Thunder finish off a perfect 10-0 season in the CCC dual matches.
Girls tennis
Los Banos 8, Pacheco 1 in Los Banos – Shirley Liu, Taylor Torongo, Melanie Silva, Adri Moreno and Kiara Azevedo all won their singles matches as the Tigers (10-0 WAC) extended their conference winning streak to 70 matches.
El Capitan 8, Livingston 1 in Livingston – Alex Guerguieva, Dana Villarama, Vann Barcelos, Eloisa Encenzo, Alaika Valera and Eimene DelaCruz helped the Gauchos sweep the singles matches in the win.
Golden Valley 6, Merced 3 in Merced – Chadue Lee, Paola Perez and Veronica Vasquez won their singles matches to propel the Cougars to a win.
