Atwater’s Velarde reaches CCC singles final

Atwater’s Catrina Velarde worked her way through the Central California Conference Singles Tournament on Tuesday and will play for the championship on Thursday at Golden Valley.

Velarde, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, will face No. 4 seed Rebekka Cripe of Turlock. Velarde and Cripe each went 3-0 on Tuesday with Velarde defeating No. 3 seed Courtnie Chan in the semifinals when Chan had to retire with an injured knee. Cripe defeated top seed Chadue Lee of Golden Valley 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal. The final is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Golden Valley. Thursday. Also, the CCC doubles tournament begins at 9 a.m. Thursday.
