Mariposa boys earn second seed in NorCal D-V basketball playoffs

The Mariposa High School boys basketball team will get a little extra time to savor its first Sac-Joaquin Section championship.

The Grizzlies received the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Northern California Regional Division V playoffs.

Mariposa (24-4) will host a second-round game Saturday at 6 p.m. The Grizzlies will face the winner of the matchup between No. 7 Stuart Hall of San Francisco and No. 10 Elliot Christian of Lodi.

The top seed is St. Joseph Notre Dame of Alameda.

Mariposa defeated Brookside Christian of Stockton 79-75 for the section championship Friday night at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

The Grizzlies won a section title in a division that has been dominated by private schools. Mariposa became the second public school to win a Division V section championship and the first since Denair in 2002.

Mariposa star Dalton Rockwood had a record-breaking night. The senior’s 35 points set a section record for a Division V championship game and equaled the fourth most in any title game, tying Merced’s Gerald Madkins (1986) and Modesto Christian’s Nick Tabari (1998).

Bradley Chambers’ seven assists tied five other players for the seventh most in a section championship game.
