Roundup: Buhach Colony’s Kendrick tosses no-hitter in debut

Alex Kendrick had quite a debut for the Buhach Colony High baseball team on Wednesday.

The Thunder freshman was called up to varsity to start on the mound and delivered a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over San Joaquin Memorial on the final day of the Fresno Easter Classic at Clovis West High.

Kendrick needed just 76 pitches to work his way through the game.

“We made a lot of plays behind him,” Buhach Colony coach Greg Wakefield said. “It was a really good outing for him. Logan Coe did a real good job calling pitches. He calls the pitches. He started out nervous, but by the third inning he really calmed down.”

The Thunder (3-4) gave him two runs to work with in the third inning as Ubaldo Romo singled in a pair of runs. Romo and Christian Witt each had two hits for the Thunder.

Everybody in the Buhach Colony dugout was well aware Kendrick was throwing a no-hitter late in the game.

“They did everything the right way,” Wakefield said. “They left him alone the last three innings. Nobody talked about it, and everybody came out on the field pretty fast at the end of the game.”

The Thunder finished the tournament 3-1.

After losing the tournament opener to Redwood (Visalia) 4-3 in eight innings, the Thunder rebounded with a 7-1 win over Chowchilla, a 7-5 win over Sheldon and the victory over Memorial.

Nick Singer threw a complete game in the win over the Redskins. Buhach Colony erased a three-run deficit against a talented Sheldon team with a five-run sixth inning. Witt delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to give the Thunder the lead in the sixth.

“It was a good bounce-back tournament for us,” said Wakefield, whose team started the season 0-4.

El Capitan 5, Livingston 0 at Merced – Sai Davuluri dominated on the mound, needing just 83 pitches to strike out 11 Wolves on his way to a three-hit shutout in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday. Jacob Pilkington led the El Capitan offense, going 3-for-3. Sammy Mora and Rafael Mercado each added two hits.

Los Banos 7, Pacheco 0 at Los Banos – Josh Gould and Julian Arrechavala combined on a three-hit shutout and James Bostick drove in three runs as the Tigers (4-3, 1-0 WAC) defeated their crosstown rivals.

Atwater 5, East Union 1 at Atwater – Cristian Curiel collected two hits and drove in two runs as the Falcons picked up their first win of the season. Alex Jimenez pitched a complete game for Atwater (1-6).
