Golden Valley boys win CCC track title
The Golden Valley High School boys track team won its third consecutive Central California Conference center meet at Joe Debely Stadium to capture the CCC championship on Wednesday.
The Cougars edged Pitman 125-123.
Distance runner Guillermo Rivas led the way with victories in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Rivas crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 28.53 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:46.18 in the 3,200.
Golden Valley’s Shawn Bettencourt won the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.48 seconds.
The Pitman girls won the CCC championship by winning their second center meet. The Pride scored 138 points. Turlock finished second with 122.
Kiana Clay took home victories in the 200 (26.22) and 400 (59.48) to pace the Pride.
The Merced girls finished third with 108 points. The Bears were led by freshmen Quinn Hagerman and Angelena Williams. Hagerman won the 1,600 (5:38.32) and the 3,200 (12:12.93). Williams also won two events, with victories in the 100 hurdles (15.79) and long jump (16 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
Golden Valley’s Naomi Peterson (100) and Stephanie Moore (high jump), Merced’s Ciara Colon (800) and Buhach Colony’s Morgan Johnson (discus) also won their respective events.
On the boys side, Merced’s Ashanti McFarland swept the sprints with wins in the 100 (11:08) and 200 (22.25).
Bears senior Daniel Ambriz won the 800 (1:54.46) and Atwater’s Brian Stokes finished first in the 110 hurdles (15.92).
The conference meet will be held on Saturday, May 7 at Atwater High.
