El Capitan swimming exits WAC with title sweep
The El Capitan swim teams will exit the Western Athletic Conference having never lost.
The Gauchos completed a perfect two-year run on Friday afternoon in Los Banos with both squads almost doubling up the competition at the WAC Championships. It was EC’s second straight undefeated season as it moves to the Central California Conference next year.
The boys team was particularly dominant, capturing eight of the 11 events to win the title with 212 points. Ceres (105) took second and Los Banos (93) finished third. The duo of Zak Jones (50-yard freestyle, 100 back) and Jacob Mumford (500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) were both multiple event winners and helped EC two of the three relays.
Livingston’s Logan Friesen (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly) was also a multiple-event winner, while Los Banos’ Samuel Vander Poel won the 100 freestyle and helped the Tigers capture the 200 freestyle relay.
The El Capitan girls team won seven events, sweeping the relays and getting a big performance from Marion Carpenter (200 IM, 100 backstroke). The Gauchos finished with 209 points. Ceres (131) was second and Los Banos (94) took third.
Ceres’ Julia Pata (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) was the only other multiple-event winner, with Mackenzie Wenham (EC, 50 freestyle), Ciana Sather (Ceres, 100 butterfly), Alex Marquez (LB, 100 freestyle) and Metzli Enriquez (EC, 500 freestyle) all winning single titles.
