Stone Ridge Christian wins inaugural WAC boys volleyball title
Davis Greenwood gave up basketball to focus on volleyball this season.
It was a bold choice for a sport in its infancy, but the Stone Ridge Christian junior has been one of the Western Athletic Conference’s stars in the inaugural boys volleyball campaign.
Greenwood might have saved his best performance for last Tuesday night. He recorded a team-high 27 assists, two blocks, and his eighth and final ace proved a pivotal point late as the Knights pulled out a 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 11-25, 15-12 victory over El Capitan to win the outright WAC title.
The Gauchos made Stone Ridge (14-1, 13-1 WAC) earn it after knocking off Patterson the night before. El Cap could have forced a three-way tie for first but struggled to slow Jonathan Collazo. The junior was the only Knight to find an offensive rhythm, recording a match-high 18 kills to go with his team-best 25 digs.
“It was a wild one,” Knights coach Ken Shaw said. “We were feeling pretty good after taking the third set and then just didn’t show up for the fourth one. We had four service errors in that one, which is very uncharacteristic, and El Cap took full advantage.
“The fifth set was intense and just went back and forth until it was 12-12. Davis got a big ace, and then they had a couple hitting errors to end it.”
Both teams will enter the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs for the first time. The Division II playoffs begin May 10, with Stone Ridge likely hosting a home match.
