Turlock routs Golden Valley in CCC opener

The Turlock High School football team got off to a slow start Friday night.

But after watching Golden Valley’s Isaiah Montanez take the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown, the Bulldogs shut out the Cougars the rest of the night.

Turlock quarterback Peyton Dunseth ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Bulldogs cruised past Golden Valley 36-6.

The Bulldogs (4-1, 1-0 Central California Conference) were stunned when Montanez took the opening kickoff all the way, but responded with 29 consecutive points to take a 29-6 halftime lead.

“We really didn’t have the ball much in the first half to get some rhythm and get something going,” Golden Valley coach Dennis Stubbs said.

After Turlock led 7-6, Cougars quarterback Armando Muzquiz threw an interception. The Golden Valley defense was able to stop Turlock at the 1-yard line, but Montanez was tackled in the end zone for a safety to give Turlock a 9-6 lead with 5:11 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs received the kickoff after the safety and marched down for a touchdown on a six-yard run from Brandon Booz to give Turlock a 15-6 lead with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

Danny Velasquez scored two touchdowns in the second quarter – a one-yard run and an 87-yard pass play from Dunseth – and the Bulldogs never looked back.

Dunseth added a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to close out the scoring.

The offense never scored for Golden Valley (3-3, 0-1 CCC).
