High school football roundup: Atwater wins Bloss Bowl
Frank Cocio threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Atwater High School ended the season with a 29-23 win over Buhach Colony in the 10th annual Bloss Bowl at Falcon Field on Friday night.
Cocio connected with Josh Wilson on a 30-yard screen pass for a touchdown and threw a 12-yard scoring strike to Efrain Perez. Cocio also scored on a one-yard sneak.
“We were able to get the ball to Josh Wilson, Noah Torres and Javier Valencia,” said Atwater coach Bob Valladao, whose team snapped an eight-game losing streak and finished 2-8 overall and 1-4 in the Central California Conference. “We were able to come out throwing and loosen them up a bit and then run underneath that.”
The Thunder (3-7, 1-4) trailed 29-9 before scoring 14 consecutive points to pull within 29-23 late, but Atwater’s Nate Gilmore stopped the Thunder’s final possession with an interception.
Buhach Colony leads the all-time series 6-4.
Hilmar 42, Mountain House 14 in Hilmar – Daniel Texeira completed 5 of 7 passes for 166 yards and four touchdowns and exited after the Yellowjackets’ fifth possession.
Texeira connected with Cody Rentfro, Chase Kindberg, Brandon Almeida and Alex Chavez.
Hilmar finished the regular season 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the Trans-Valley League.
Stone Ridge Christian 43, Brookside Christian 0 in Atwater – The Knights (9-1, 5-0 Central California Athletic Alliance) ended the regular season with their eighth consecutive shutout.
Shane Casillas carried 21 times for 217 yards and three touchdowns for Stone Ridge Christian. Jonathan Collazo had 174 yards on 10 carries, including an 85-yard touchdown that gave the Knights a 28-0 lead in the third quarter.
Austin Rees also topped the century mark with 107 yards and a touchdown on eight carries.
Mariposa 58, Le Grand 12 in Le Grand – Jake Mayberry threw for two touchdowns and ran for two scores as the Grizzlies (5-4, 4-3 Southern League) defeated their longtime rivals and clinched a playoff spot.
Le Grand’s Beto Marquez threw for two touchdowns, covering eight and 89 yards to Jose Renteria.
Ripon Christian 34, Delhi 14 in Delhi – The Hawks’ Jesse Flores ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough in a loss to the Knights.
Jonah Lewis had four touchdowns for Ripon Christian. He scored on a 50-yard punt return and had three touchdown catches.
Dos Palos 26, Avenal 16 in Avenal – Andrew Walker rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns to help the Broncos win the West Sierra League title outright.
Walker scored on runs of 31 and two yards in the first half. He didn’t play in the second half for precautionary reasons after being banged up in the first two quarters.
Chowchilla 15, Liberty 13 in Madera – The Redskins raced to a 15-0 halftime lead thanks to touchdown runs by Anthony Stewart (19 carries, 108 yards) and Ryan Selby.
Chowchilla (8-2, 4-1 NSL) had to hold on from there, thwarting a two-point conversion that would have tied the score with three minutes to play.
