Gustine outlasts Rio Vista in shootout
For the first time this season, the Gustine High School football team found itself in a shootout. The third-seeded Redskins kept their season alive with a wild 70-54 win over No. 6 Rio Vista in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI quarterfinals on Friday night.
“We haven’t been in a footrace like that before,” said Redskins coach Russell McWilliams, whose team improved to 10-1. “We basically had to keep answering.”
Leading the way was Gustine running back Brandon Labry, who turned in a monster performance with 377 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries. Labry added a touchdown catch.
Teammate Fabian Morales added 104 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries. Morales broke free for an 80-yard touchdown run.
The Redskins racked up 525 yards on the ground and threw for 106 yards.
Gustine’s defense, which hadn’t given up more than 23 points in a game this season, was torched by Rio Vista quarterback Ryan Mackey.
“Their quarterback was outstanding,” McWilliams said. “Their receivers were very good. A couple dropped balls were what slowed them down. We hadn’t faced a passing attack like that this year. I think a lot of it was defense fatigue. We held Orestimba’s offense to 14 points last week, and that’s one of the best offenses in our area.
“We had a lot of missed assignments tonight. That’s way out of character.”
The Redskins advance to the semifinals against No. 2 Bradshaw Christian, which defeated No. 7 Amador 49-15 on Friday night.
