The California Aqueduct is also perking up for striped bass, and catfishing is best with cut bait or chicken liver. Striperz Gone Wild ‘Toys for Tots’ tournament is scheduled for Dec. 14 at Volta Road on the California Aqueduct. The entry fee for this tournament is an unwrapped children’s toy that will be donated to youth in Merced County. In the southern aqueduct, schools of striped bass remain on the move, and the best location has been around the moving water around the check gates. Anchovies, lugworms, chicken liver, Flukes, swimbaits, top water walking baits, or small jerkbaits are all effective. Triple S Dip Bait or cut baits are best for catfish.

Aqueduct anglers are always advised to use caution as well as wearing a PFD as the water is swift, cold, and dangerous.

A map of the 16 designated fishing locations on the California Aqueduct can be accessed through this link: https://water.ca.gov/-/media/DWR-Website/Web-Pages/What-We-Do/Recreation/Files/230424_SWP-Fishing-Guildines-Locations_Online_FINAL.pdf

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported Eastman remains solid for quality largemouth bass as the cooler weather is creating more active conditions for the bass. Plastics on a Texas-rig, jigs, big plastics on a shakey head, or small swimbaits are the best techniques. The bass are spread out, and anglers have to search around for them. Minimal change at Hensley with catfish on chicken liver or anchovies and carp on dough baits taking center stage. Eastman dropped slightly to 533.83 feet in elevation and 47% of capacity with Hensley basically holding at 472.46 feet in elevation and 17% of capacity. At Eastman, no tournaments are scheduled for the remainder of the year with only one in mid-November at Hensley.

Rainbow trout trolling remains outstanding for fat, healthy trout to 5 pounds. The fish are starting to move into the shallows as the water is cooling to the mid-60’s, and the bait is also on the move. Working the shad schools remain the key, and Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing advised fast-trolling spoons to cover as much water as possible. Ryan Denner of Central Valley Bait and Tackle in Modesto reported Pedro is the best of the Mother Lode lakes for bass with jigs or plastics on the drop-shot. The bass are found at various depths, but there are many feeding on the shad schools as they move up into the water column. updates are posted at www.donpedrolake.com. Launch updates are posted at www.donpedrolake.com. The lake continues to recede, and it dropped a foot this week to 775.47 feet in elevation.

Ryan Denner reported numbers of bass have been outstanding but finding size remains a challenge. There is a topwater bite in the mornings with small lures such as Choppo’s, PopR’s, Rico’s, or Rovers. Walking baits or umbrella rigs have also been effective. Catfishing has been solid with live minnows in the coves, and holdover rainbows are moving closer to the surface around the shad schools. There are four club tournaments remaining in November and four in December so interest should be heating up. The Merced River continues to drop, and it is 258 cfs at Merced Falls downstream of Lake McSwain. The Reel Deal Market and Barrett’s Cove Marina will only be open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 pm during the winter months.

The lake dropped 3½ feet to 804.92 feet in elevation and 35% of capacity. The Reel Deal Market and Barrett’s Cove Marina will only be open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 pm during the winter months.

Since the Merced Irrigation Trout Derby in early October, the trout bite has slowed to a crawl. The holdover rainbows have moved into the cooler waters of the river arm up to the Exchequer Dam. The lake rose slightly to 92% of capacity.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported not much has changed here with as the bass bite remains very slow. The Tulare Police Activities League Fundraising Tournament was held over the weekend, and the top limit for pre-fishing was just pushing 10 pounds. Plastics on the drop-shot remain the best technique.

The lake held at 501.39 feet in elevation and 42% of capacity. Sycamore Island is open 6 a.m.-5:30 p.m. daily. The flows in the San Joaquin River at Friant held at 442 cfs. One remaining tournament is scheduled in November along with one in December.

Kyle Wise of Head Hunter Sport Fishing reported the rainbow trout bite remains challenging, but the bait fish are starting to move into the shallows with the cooling water temperatures. Bass, trout, and catfish are all loading up on shad, and it is a matter of finding the bait to find success. Numbers of bass remain the rule but finding size has been challenging. Club tournaments dominate the lake in the fall months with two remaining in November and two in December. The lake held at 1,033.23 feet in elevation and 75% of capacity.

Brian Klassen was out this week with Dan Weaver and Jeeter Carr, both from Clovis, and they started at 7 a.m. at Deer Creek and traveled up the main river channel in search of king salmon.

“This was the area of the lake that has been producing over the last few months, but we found that all the shad have moved out and didn’t mark any fish until we got to the Power Lines where we picked up two kings at 16 and 21 inches on Blue Hawaiian cut plugs and two 14-inch rainbows on Speedy Shiners in trout colors,” Klassen said.

“The kings were at 60 feet in depth with the rainbows at 40, and we also landed two random 15-inch catfish rolling shad at 55 feet in depth. All the shad had completely disappeared from where they have been, and I have been hearing reports that the shad have moved to the river arm, but it’s shallow up there. We did mark a few fish at 80 feet in Windy Gap, and the surface temperature has dropped to 64 degrees.”

Klassen is one of the seminar speakers at the sold-out Fresno Bee Fishing Expo on Nov. 9.

For bass, Michael Crayne said reports are up and down as some are finding good action with others struggling. Plastics on the drop-shot or spooning are the best techniques at 40 to 50 feet as the reaction bite has been slow. Trout plants over the past two weeks in the lower Kings River have led to a much-improved bite near the bridge below the dam or at Winton Park with there is a good bite with jigs, crankbaits, plastics on the drop-shot, or Keitech swimbaits at Power Bait, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, spinners, or spoons. The flows have dropped to 250 cfs, and the trout are holding in the deeper pools. Another trout plant is scheduled this week. The lake rose around ¾-feet to 824.78 feet in elevation and 40% of capacity. Two club tournaments are scheduled in November with four in December.

San Luis Reservoir and O’Neill Forebay

Striper 3 Catfish 2 Bass 2 Crappie 2

Josh Mesa of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill reported crazy numbers of striped bass from the bank or boat in the main San Luis Reservoir with live jumbo minnows, Duo Realis Tide Minnows in all white or white/red head, lipless crankbaits, or paddletail swimbaits.

Roger George of Roger George Guide Service said that the bite in the main lake is up and down from day to day for trollers, but more consistent for anglers working the banks with flukes and ripbaits. There are boils some days in the coves for topwater anglers. I took out guest Gary Lindemann of Oakhurst this week to get a few fish for him. He hadn’t fished since 2022. We started slow but around noon we hit a group of active fish- hooking two big ones at the same time - and it was off to the races on both poles. The first fish netted went 411⁄2-inches, 29 pounds, and then when Gary finally got the other one up.

I could barely get the huge 44-inch, 41 pounder in the boat. Incredible, two fish for 70 pounds at the same time.

A new personal best for Gary by nearly pounds and it’s my biggest guest fish in 12 years of guiding. We hit the fish at around 50 feet on shad-colored baits.

Rapalas, Lucky Crafts and Smithwicks are working on the active fish. I released both of them on the Seaqualizer release tool. Epic day! I’ll be doing a trophy striper tips seminar at the now sold out Fresno Bee Fishing Expo on Saturday.

In the O’Neill Forebay, the grass is dying off with the colder water temperatures, and striped bass are taken on big 5-inch paddletail swimbaits on jig heads ranging from ½- to 1-ounce. The main lake held at 52% of capacity balanced between water imports and exports while the forebay rose to 95% of capacity.

Boat inspections at San Luis Reservoir, O’Neill Forebay, and Los Banos Creek Reservoir in Merced County are required when exiting these lakes to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. At O’Neill Forebay, golden mussels were recently detected. Boats leaving these San Luis Recreation Area lakes will not be granted a clean boat tag. After boating in waterways, always remember to clean, drain, and dry to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species. Shaver Lake guide emeritus, Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters said, “Shaver continues to provide trout fishermen with multi limits of trout; however, cooler weather slowed the boat count leading to the weekend, but those who went out were rewarded with ample fish ranging from 13 to 24 inches. The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s plant of trophy sized rainbows the week before coupled with an awesome holdover and yearling bite brought more up for the weekend. Firefighter David Geil Jr. of Sanger took his dad David Sr. and sons Owen and Ostin out on Thursday, picking up four limits of catch and release rainbows with the smaller fish ranging from 13 to 16 inches along with four trophy trout from 3 to 5 pounds. There were also five golden trout ranging from 14 to 16 inches that were released, and these trout were planted by the CDFW four or five years ago.”

Dick’s Mountain Tackle’s Trout Busters in Texas Tea or orange Mountain Hoochies tipped with scented corn behind Dick’s Mountain Dodgers in Blue Lagoon or Pink Scale at 25 to 35 feet deep from The Fishermen’s Club to Stevenson Creek were the ticket. \The Sierra ramp is doable, and the marinas are closed.

Check ramp conditions at the Sierra Marina via their webcam at http://www.sierramarina.com/webcam-weather-page.html.

At Huntington, a few anglers are trying for rainbows with Power Bait or nightcrawlers in the shallows. Shaver held at 54% of capacity with Huntington also dropping to 62% of capacity.

The Dungeness crab opener was a challenge for many private boaters as numbers of undersized crab were found in the shallowest water. Captain Melynda Dodds on the New Captain Pete took out a charter for stuffed bags of Dungeness while the Queen of Hearts posted near limits of crab and over half-limits of rockfish at 171 Dungeness, 138 rockfish, and 2 lingcod on the opener. The swell affected the rockfish bite, but the Riptide was able to post 10 limits and 2 lings. November’s rockfish regulations require less than 20 fathoms before finishing off the season during the month of December over 50 fathoms.

Monterey/Santa Cruz

Rockfish 3 Halibut 2 Striper 2 White seabass 1 Sand dabs 3 Surf perch 3

From the surf, Josh Mesa reported most of the striped bass have left the Monterey/Santa Cruz area to head north and into San Francisco Bay on their way into the California Delta. Surf perch fishing has been solid along Santa Cruz-area beaches with grubs on a Carolina-rig from Mekini Baitz, Honey Badger Baits, or Lucky 13.

Allen Bushnell of Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing and Surf Casting Guide Service reported, “This week we will be experiencing a few transitions. In the fishing game, everything is always moving, shifting and changing. The recreational Dungeness crab opener was Saturday, Nov. 2, and once this year the DFW has imposed temporary constrictions on legal gear to utilize while sport fishing crab in our area. No crab pots are allowed due to concerns about whale entanglement. As occurred last year, the commercial Dungeness season is delayed until such time the DFW determines that entanglement is sufficiently low risk before those hardy crabbers are allowed to start dropping and hauling their pots. DFW regs also change in regard to rockfishing on Nov. 1. The deepwater reefs we’ve been allowed to fish this past month are closed again while nearshore waters are open. The past week provided plenty of action for anglers all around the bay. Chris’s Fishing and Whale Watching in Monterey reported cookie-cutter counts of rockfish limits for all trips aboard the Check Mate and Caroline. Santa Cruz charter boat reports indicate similar results with big fish and quick limits from the deep water reefs, especially those off the north coast. Davenport and other north coast spots provided some halibut action for anglers fishing in 70-80 feet of water. A few albacore and possible bluefin tuna catches were reported, but numbers were low and few boats were searching the tuna grounds 30-60 miles offshore.”

Golden Gate/San Francisco Bay

Halibut 2 Striper 3 Rockfish 3 Leopard shark 3 Crab 3

On the opening weekend, 10-crab limits were taken by the California Dawn 1 and 2 on Sunday after less than limits on Saturday while the Pacific Dream, also out of Berkeley Marina, scored 23 limits on the opener followed by three-quarter limits on Sunday. Rockfish scores were held ranged from a few fish per rod to half-limits due to a big swell along the Marin coast. Getting dialed in on the crab for the opener proved challenging with boats from Half Moon Bay to Bodega Bay coming up a few crustaceans short of limits. Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing found excellent conditions on Monday for 25 limits of crab to 3 pounds and 25 limits of rockfish. Crabbing is treacherous on smaller boats when the wind and swell come up, and two boats capsized over the weekend north of Bodega Bay, resulting in loss of life for several individuals.

The ports of Monterey, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, San Francisco Bay, and Bodega Bay are limited to using hoops or snares as the use of traps is temporarily prohibited between the Sonoma/Mendocino County line and Lopez Point, Monterey County in Fishing Zones 3 and 4. The ports north of the Sonoma/Mendocino County Line: Fort Bragg, Shelter Cove, Eureka, and Trinidad along with southern port Morro will be allowed to used recreational crab traps in Fishing Zones 1, 2, and 5. However, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has delayed the season opener between the California/Oregon border (42° 0.00’ N latitude) and the southern boundary of the Reading Rock State Marine Reserve and State Marine Conservation Area (41° 17.6’ N latitude) due to unhealthy levels of domoic acid in the crab. Dungeness crab may not be taken recreationally by any method in that area. This affects the port of Crescent City, and Trinidad boats will have to set pots south of the Reading Rock line. As a reminder, crab traps cannot be used south of Point Arguello. In addition, a Fleet Advisory has been issued for all Fishing Zones for the recreational fishery. The commercial Dungeness crab fishery south of the Sonoma/Mendocino County line was scheduled to open on Nov. 15, 2024, in Fishing Zones 3, 4, 5 and 6, but the season opener has been delayed. CDFW anticipates the next risk assessment will take place on or around Nov. 15, and this is expected to inform the potential for a statewide commercial fishery opener on Dec. 1 along with the potential to modify the recreational trap restriction. In California, the minimum size for Dungeness crabs that can be kept is 5¾ inches measured from the edge of the shell to the edge of the shell directly in front, excluding lateral spines, Private boaters are advised to review the Best Practices Guide available at the CDFW website: www.wildlife.ca.gov/crab.

Inside the bay, Captain Ron Koyasako of Nautilus Excursions in San Francisco put his clients onto quick limits of striped bass to 8 pounds drifting live anchovies in the central bay. The halibut bite has slowed down considerably, but once again, this is November. White sea bass remain scarce, but leopard shark are another solid option. J and P Bait in San Francisco remains open 6-9 a.m. Friday-Monday, closed Tuesday-Thursday.

Delta/Stockton

Bass 3 Striper 3 Sturgeon 3 Catfish 2 Bluegill 3

As the water continues to cool down, striped bass are migrating out of San Francisco Bay into the Delta as the fall run has begun in earnest. Also migrating through and into the Delta are Chinook salmon, and many of the salmon are moving into dead end sloughs without hope of spawning.

Johnny Wang, manager of Turner’s Outdoorsman in Stockton, reported a solid striped bass bite to 5 pounds soaking mudsuckers or fresh shad near Collinsville. He said, “These are fresh fish coming in with a blue stripe, and the linesides are running with the bait. The ‘witches’ hair’ has been challenging at the top of the tide as the water is cooling, and the grass is breaking off in the flats. Largemouth bass has also been solid, and there are numbers of salmon being caught and released on jerkbaits or crankbaits.”

Denise Loo of Alan Fong Outdoors was out with her mother in the north Delta, and they got into a ‘Smorgasbord’ of fish with stripers boiling on the surface with jerkbaits before moving onto to crappie, perch, bass, and a 20-pound salmon that hit a bass lure.

Alan Fong was also in the Mokelumne River targeting crappie, and he said, “We must have landed 80 crappie, but most of them are hand-sized. There were plenty of sea lions in there, and we were targeting bass with jerkbaits and kept getting hit by salmon, so we moved out of the area since there were so many salmon rolling on the surface. The stripers will be heading in within the next few weeks from San Francisco and Suisun Bay, and the action will break out this month.”

Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, was also in the Mokelumne River for largemouth bass, and he reported solid numbers of largemouth bass on spinnerbaits, the ima Squarebill crankbait in Red Craw or shad, or the Berkley Slobberknocker. “The key is working around rocks and weeds, and I am moving around to find the greatest water movement with these smaller tides. I didn’t see many striped bass, but this weather will bring them in.”

Vince Borges of Vince Borges Outdoors was out with his partner, Chad Frie, in the south Delta, and he reported good numbers of largemouth bass to 4 pounds on reaction baits, but there are few big fish. He said, “The fall bite is on, and there are schools of bait fish everywhere. Everything is on reaction with underspins, jerkbaits, or little paddletail swimbaits.”

With all of the salmon in the Sacramento and San Joaquin River sections of the Delta, the fish must be released while in the water. White sturgeon must also be released, but the action remains tremendous in Suisun Bay for the few anglers trying. Six-pack operators continue to catch-and-release up to a dozen diamondbacks per trip. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has released a video demonstrating proper release techniques for white sturgeon at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6XluYMW_vA.
