Despite the rain and more than 30 mph winds, the Striperz Gone Wild Fifth Annual Toy Drive Fishing Tournament was a huge success as a total of 334 toys were collected for needy children from Merced/Fresno Counties. Migz Padilla collected 220 toys alone. The group has collected over 1100 toys over the past five years. The tournament was taken by Jensen Vang with a striped bass right on the target-length of 27.75 inches. All participating children were sent home with a new rod/reel. Great work but a caring group of anglers.

Aqueduct anglers are always advised to use caution as well as wearing a PFD as the water is swift, cold, and dangerous.

Michael Crayne of Valley Rod and Gun in Clovis reported a trout plant occurred last week, and anglers are tossing all sort of Huddleston swimbaits in rainbow trout or similar big plugs with intermittent action for the big largemouth. The bass are feeding on the rainbows, and they are chasing them throughout the lake. The most consistent technique is to drag the bottom with plastics on a Texas- or Carolina-rig. The bass action at Hensley has slowed since the 22-pound limit in mid-November. Catfish, bluegill, or crappie are the top species here. Eastman rose slightly to 534.08 feet in elevation and 47% of capacity with Hensley also rising to 473.65 feet in elevation and 18% of capacity. No tournaments are scheduled at either lake through the end of the year.

Lake Don Pedro

Bass 3 Trout 2 Kokanee 2 King salmon 2 Crappie 3

The lake is currently open, but a temporary closure is being evaluated as an option. With New Melones closed, Mother Lode bass anglers are opting for Pedro. A solid 21-pound limit took Saturday’s Westside Bass tournament, and swimbaits, umbrella rigs, or Keitech swimbaits on an underspin are all working for the larger grade of bass. A recent trout plant has anglers working the big Huddleston swimbaits in rainbow trout patterns. Crappie action has been solid with minijigs or small minnows once the slabs are found holding in submerged structure. Forward Facing Sonar is important for locating and staying on the schools. The rainbow trout are moving toward the surface as the water temperatures are cooling, and king salmon are also moving up. Launch updates are posted at www.donpedrolake.com. The lake is at 774.15 feet in elevation and 69% of capacity.Boaters are reminded to complete Self-Inspection prior to launching.

McClure continues to improve for small spotted bass with plastics on the drop-shot or jigs at depths from 15 to 30 feet along steep bluff walls or main lake points. The bait is heading into deeper water, and the bass are moving with the bait. There are two club tournaments remaining in December. The Merced River is at 244 cfs at Merced Falls downstream of Lake McSwain. The Reel Deal Market and Barrett’s Cove Marina will only be open on 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays during the winter months. The lake dropped slightly to 802.88 feet in elevation and 63% of capacity.

Call: Central Valley Bait and Tackle (209) 312-9417.

Lake McSwain

Trout 3

About 1,000 pounds of Calaveras Trout Farm were released into the lake on Monday, and many of the fish were the popular Lightning trout. Action from the banks will heat up from the Brush Pile, Handicapped Docks, or the peninsula between the marina with Power Bait, Kastmasters, or inflated nightcrawlers. Holdover rainbows from the mid-November plant have headed up the river arm, and trollers are scoring with shad-patterned spoons, blade/’crawler combinations, or Wedding Rings tipped with a nightcrawler are the top techniques for trollers. The lake is at 94% of capacity.

Millerton Lake/San Joaquin River

Bass 2 Striped bass 1 Shad 1 Bluegill 3 Crappie 2

Bill Kunz of St. Croix Rods reported the combination of 27 degrees in the morning, post-frontal conditions, and a full moon made for extremely tough conditions during Sunday’s Fresno Bass Club tournament won with a five-fish limit of 8.83 pounds.

“It was tough for quality bites as there were plenty of skinny 14-inch, 1¼-pound fish,” he said. Spotted bass to 2½ pounds have been landed on occasion, but these are the exception, and not the rule. The lake rose three feet to 499.04 feet in elevation and 41% of capacity. Sycamore Island has closed until January. The flows in the San Joaquin River at Friant held at 428 cfs.

The gates closed for all launch ramps on Dec. 7, and only the Glory Hole launch ramp will remain open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm to obtain a red tag to start a 30-day quarantine period. The US Bureau of Reclamation is anticipating the opening of a decontamination station operated by the marina within a few weeks. Once the lake is reopened after the 30-day closure, boats must be off the water by 4:00 pm to receive a green tag to relaunch without quarantining or decontamination. Bank fishing is allowed. Non-motorized watercraft, such as kayaks and paddleboards, may also be subject to inspection. The lake rose to 1036.23 feet in elevation and 76% of capacity.

Pine Flat Reservoir/Kings River

Bass 3 Trout 2 Kokanee 0 King salmon 2 Catfish 2 Crappie 2

Michael Crayne reported the bass are holding deep from 40 to 60 feet in depth, and plastics on the drop-shot or a shaky head are working best for numbers. When a bait ball is discovered, shad-patterned Keitech swimbaits or umbrella rigs are a good option. The rainbow trout have moved up in the water column from 20-to 40-feet, and shad-patterned spoons within the bait balls are working. The king salmon bite has slowed down. Trout plants have occurred over the past three weeks in the lower Kings River, and limits of planters have been the story with live crickets, salmon eggs, Power Bait, spinners, or spoons. There continues to be citations issued for anglers fishing in the catch-and-release section with barbed hooks or in possession of trout. There were large dead trout floating in this section after being released into the water prior to intervention from the game warden. The catch-and-release section is located below the Alta Weir (also known as Cobbles Weir) extending downstream to the Highway 180 bridge. This area is considered a zero limit, catch-and-release zone where only artificial lures with barbless hooks are allowed. The flows have dropped to 404 cfs, but they may rise with the recent rain. Another trout plant is scheduled this week. The lake rose 4 feet to 832.82 feet in elevation and 43% of capacity. One tournament is scheduled in December, the Dec. 28 Hmong New Year tournament. Trout plants are scheduled at Pine Flat and Avocado Lake this week, and a trout plant is also scheduled in the upper Kings River this week.

San Luis Reservoir and O’Neill Forebay

Striper 2 Catfish 2 Bass 2 Crappie 2

Mickey Clements of Coyote Bait and Tackle in Morgan Hill reported a consistent bite in the main lake with topwater lures such as Reaction Innovation’s Vixens, Zara Spooks in bone, or the ima Big Stick. Jumbo minnows are also working for boaters and bank anglers.

Roger George of Roger George Guide Service said that the active fish have gone deeper – after some morning topwater flurries . “ The water temps are from 60-62 , visibility is clear down to 8 feet and the water has been coming up around a foot or more every day. In fact the lake has come up 20 feet since Nov. 30, changing the areas where the fish are holding. I scouted with a buddy before the atmospheric river hit and we released over 20 schoolfish fish to 25 inches during the day – pretty much searching from spot to spot all day. The active fish are hitting more in the 40 foot plus depth range on the usual Shad colored baits when you find them. The full moon didn’t help the bite much either” George said.

In the O’Neill Forebay, bank anglers are scoring a small legal grade of striped bass with pile worms or anchovies around the Old Medieros launch ramp, Highway 33 side, or Check 12 when the pumps are running. The main lake rose to 67% of capacity balanced between water imports and exports while the forebay is at 81% of capacity. Boat inspections at San Luis Reservoir, O’Neill Forebay, and Los Banos Creek Reservoir in Merced County are required when exiting these lakes to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. At O’Neill Forebay, golden mussels were recently detected. Boats leaving these San Luis Recreation Area lakes will not be granted a “clean boat” tag. After boating in waterways, always remember to clean, drain, and dry to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species. Captain Mike Beighey of Bass Lake Fishing reported the lake level didn’t rise much despite the intermittent storms throughout the week. Launching is a true hardship, but it can be done with help from an additional person. Bank fishing remained good with trout up to 20 inches being caught on Power Bait.

“My son Bobby and his friends have been very successful fishing from the bank,” Beighey said. “It looks like some decent weather entering the Christmas holidays which should bring out more shore fishermen. I am gearing up for the 2025 season which looks like a return of the kokanee bite. I’ll be taking reservations starting Jan. 15.”

Shaver Lake/Huntington Lake

Shaver Lake guide emeritus, Dick Nichols of Dick’s Fishing Charters said, “A storm arrived on Friday night with a predicted two feet of snowfall. On Saturday, Shaver was under a weather warning alert with heavy wind and snow forecasted with a high of 39 and low of 22 degrees. Few fishermen hit the lake this past week, and in fact, no boats were observed Wednesday through Saturday due to extreme weather conditions. It is most understandable that people stayed close to home. Prior to the series of storms arriving at Shaver, trollers were doing well with a couple limits of yearling and recent plant trout caught. The eastern part of the lake was most productive as the Fishermen’s Club, Stevenson Bay, and the Tunnel provided the best activity at 15 to 20 feet down. With improving weather, the same good action should return. A few 14-inch kokanee have been caught providing a ray of hope that there was a good kokanee spawn 2 years ago.”

Both marinas are closed. The Edison ramp is out of the water. The Sierra ramp is good to launch. Supplies can be found at Shaver businesses. Check the Sierra Marina webcam at http://www.sierramarina.com/webcam-weather-page.html for conditions before going up as the marinas are closed.

The storms are prime time for ‘brown baggers’ to pull their aluminum boats through the snow to launch at Huntington. Few reports are anticipated from this secretive crew. Shaver is at 60% of capacity with Huntington dropping slightly to 60% of capacity. A trout plant is scheduled at Shaver the week of Dec. 22.

Prior to the stormy weather, limits of Dungeness crab and rockfish have been the rule. Interest has been slow overall, and the party boats running to deep water are scratching up to 17 limits of rockfish. Captain Melynda Dodds on the New Captain Pete has been running crab-only trips for limits given enough interest. Rockfishing is limited to 50 fathoms for the rest of the season ending Dec. 31.

Monterey/Santa Cruz

Rockfish 3 Halibut 2 Striper 2 White seabass 1 Sand dabs 3 Surf perch 3

From the surf, Mickey Clements reported Santa Cruz remains the top location for surf perch, and it is a matter of finding the beaches when the swell is down. Gulp! Sand Worms, Honey Badger motor oil/red flake grubs,or Lucky 13 grubs on a Carolina-rig are the top offerings.

Chris’s Fishing and Whale Watching out of Monterey continues to load up with deep water limits of rockfish along with a few ling cod. Sunday’s trip produced 21 limits of rockfish and 4 lingcod. Easy access to deep water more than 300 feet close to the harbor is a bonus for Monterey Bay party boats.

Allen Bushnell of Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing and Surf Casting Guide Service reported, “Daylight hours are short and mornings have been distinctly chilly this past week. A steady swell has kept the surfers happy and winds have been mild. For the most part, Monterey Bay anglers enjoyed decent conditions for deep water excursions chasing rock cod or Dungeness crab. Surfcasters were a bit more challenged as the swell kicked up a lot of seaweed in the shallows around the bay. Also, we’ve not seen very dramatic structure as yet on those sandy beaches. When the swells are big and the beaches are smooth, it’s more difficult to find feeding surfperch within casting range.

Dedicated fishermen keep trying, though. Persistence pays, as Tom Niccum from Coyote Bait and Tackle was reminded last Sunday.

“I got out this morning and headed over to the beaches near Watsonville. Conditions were perfect,” he said. “The water was clean and clear. Not many, if any, sand crabs were seen. The bite was fantastic for mediums and a few larger-mediums. Nothing real big but lots of bites. I caught fish on just about every bait I used. It was a great morning! I fished from about 0630-0945. Condition should be the same tomorrow morning!” Niccum returned to that same beach on Wednesday. He reported nowhere near as many fish biting, but did land one of his biggest barred surf perch ever. It measured 15½ inches and weighed in at three pounds, four ounces. We have not seen many striped bass reported caught for a while now, though December can provide a decent bass bite on the beaches near the mouths of the Pajaro and Salinas rivers. Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz heard tell of a few stripers caught from those spots near the rivers this week. Fraser also reported very good rockfishing for anglers in the Santa Cruz area. Current regulations have us fishing for rock cod from 300 feet and deeper. The best reports near Santa Cruz are coming from deepwater reefs along the North Coast from Natural Bridges to Ano Nuevo. JT Thomas from Go Fish Santa Cruz took his clients aboard the beautiful Miss Beth to that area on Sunday and returned with limits for all on the boat. “They caught limits of rockfish including vermilion, yellow tail, chilli peppers and canaries,” he reported. In Monterey, the story is pretty much the same for rockfish anglers. Chris’ Fishing Trips reported limits of rockfish plus up to 24 lingcod per trip this weekend aboard their flagship Check Mate. Owner Chris Arcoleo is always willing to send his boats as far down the coast as conditions permit. The bite is always better and the fish always bigger from the Carmel Highlands down past Point Sur.”

Golden Gate/San Francisco Bay

Halibut 2 Striper 3 Rockfish 3 Leopard shark 3 Sturgeon 2 Crab 3

When the weather conditions allow, deep water rockfishing has been outstanding with limits of Dungeness crab and limits to near limits of quality rockfish taken from the North Farallon Island to Rittenburg Bank. Rittenburg is special, and when the boats can make it out there, up to 31 limits of rockfish have been taken on a single 1½-hour drift. When the weather is less cooperative, the boats have been working from the North Farallon toward Fanny Shoals for up to limits.

Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sport Fishing has the closest access to Rittenburg, and he put his load of 23 anglers onto limits of rockfish by 9:15 am before setting gear for limits of Dungeness crab. Before the weather went south, Captain Ryan Giamonna of North Bay Charters found 23 yellowtail and an albacore on a mid-week trip 30 miles offshore. Powers went out on a private boat, and they also landed 6 yellowtail and 2 big albacore after trolling by a floating log.

Captain James Smith of the California Dawn Sport Fishing hasn’t been out since Dec. 11 due to the wind and weekend storm, but they continually take up to 27 limits of rockfish and crab when they are able to make it to the grounds.

“On our last trip to Rittenburg, one drift was all that was necessary for limits of massive rockfish,” he said.

With the commercial crab season not anticipated to open until the new year at the earliest, the only way to get fresh crab is to jump on a party boat. The rockfish season ends on Dec. 31, and it is limited to 50 fathoms or deeper north of Point Lopez in Monterey County to the Oregon Border.

Meanwhile, inside of San Francisco Bay, schools of striped bass are lurking, and the schools are found around Red Rock, the Brothers, or Angel Island with tube jigs or spoons.

For now, it’s just a matter of taking advantage of the weather windows.

Out of Morro Bay Landing, one boat was out on Sunday with 30 anglers for near-limits of rockfish consisting of 270 assorted and 5 Boccaccio for 25 fish shy of full limits. Out of Virg’s Landing, the Black Pearl was also out on Sunday with 15 anglers for limits of assorted rockfish and 5 lingcod. passengers for 200 rockfish. Out of Patriot Sport Fishing in Port San Luis, their last trip was on the Dec. 9 with two boats returning with 33 limits of rockfish consisting of 283 assorted, 35 vermilion to 9 pounds, 12 Boccaccio, and 2 lingcod to 6 pounds. Delta/Stockton

Bass 2 Striper 2 Sturgeon 3 Catfish 2 Bluegill 3

On the Sacramento River side of the Delta, the sturgeon bite slowed down last weekend due to a lack of water movement from small tides, but the action rebounded this week with party boat captains putting their clients onto up to 20 sturgeon to the boat. The diamondbacks are moving up the river, but there are plenty of fish holding from Pittsburg to Martinez. Tide movement makes a huge difference as too much or too little water movement will affect the bite. Heavy fog continues to be a concern, and the winds on Saturday limited any boats from heading out. The water was just starting to clear up after the early November rains, but the recent rainfall is bringing more dirty water, logs, and debris into the Sacramento side. Striped bass are holding from Collinsville upriver into Liberty Island, and the clearest water has been in the far north Delta. Live mudsuckers have been the top bait in the dirty water around Rio Vista. Largemouth bass action has slowed considerably with the colder water temperatures in the 49- to 52-degree range. Palm-sized crappie continue to school up around structure in the north Delta. The water is cleaner in the San Joaquin side of the Delta, but the striped bass bite has been spotty with some action in the main channel around King Island, but normally at this time of year, the linesides would be heading south toward Discovery Bay to find warmer water. T

he shad generally pile into the south Delta, but with the water temperatures in the 49- to 52-degree range, it is a few degrees warmer than normal. Fog remains a concern in the early mornings, and there is floating debris in the main channel, including large trees or logs. Bass fishing has slowed with the colder water temperatures, and the bite windows are few and far between. The warmest water is found along the north-facing banks on sloughs running east and west. Reaction baits are a good option on light fluorocarbon line along the outside edges of the weed lines where the bass are digging in to find slightly warmer temperatures. Umbrella rigs, underspins, or ripbaits are good options. Crappie continue to school up in the south Delta sloughs, and bank anglers along with boaters are picking off the palm-sized slabs. Finding clear water is the key to success.

Invasive golden mussels pose a major threat to the state’s water conveyance projects, and the mussels have been found in several locations on the San Joaquin side of the Delta.
