Is the speed limit on your street changing? Merced proposes new limits

Merced city leaders could change the speed limit on more than 80 sections of road in town, including major roadways and residential streets.

Before officially adopting the changes, the City Council is taking public input at its next meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at City Hall, 678 W. 18th St.

The council recently hired Roseville-based Omni-Means Ltd. to do a survey of roads throughout town, which is required before city staffers can make adjustments.

The survey is done every five years, according to Steven Son, the deputy director of Public Works. The survey and changes to the speed limit are done under guidelines from the Federal Highway Administration, he said.

“The whole purpose of this study is to get the political aspect out of it,” Son said recently. “It’s just a black-and-white situation.”

The survey recommends a speed based on its findings, but the city’s engineering department can propose a change to the recommendation of up to 5 mph faster or slower, according to Son.

Of the 190 stretches of road surveyed, here are the recommended and proposed changes:
