Police say threats to Merced schools not credible

Merced police said Monday afternoon they were investigating threats made via social media against Merced city schools that they said “have not been deemed credible.”

The school sent an automated message to parents at 4 p.m. alerting them to the investigation.

Lt. Don King said the threats were made on Facebook, but there were no direct threats to any of the schools.

“These are general threats, and we put all of our school resource officers on alert,” King told the Sun-Star. “They weren’t specific enough to classify as a crime.”

The Facebook profile linked to the threats did not contain enough information for police to identify the source, King said.

The school message sent to parents said the district takes all threatening comments seriously and site administrators will remain vigilant.
