Confirmed fatality in Highway 140 crash
A 38-year-old woman from Le Grand was killed Wednesday morning in a single-car crash on Highway 140 near Orchard Drive, the California Highway Patrol confirmed.
She was headed west around 8:24 a.m. on Highway 140, west of Orchard Drive, in a 2005 Chevrolet Caviler, said Officer Eric Zuniga, a public information officer with the CHP. For an unknown reason the driver drifted off the road way and hit a concrete canal embankment.
The woman was identified by the Merced County Coroner’s Office as Tonya Lane.
Lane was pinned in her vehicle and had to be removed by emergency responders. She died at the scene, Zuniga said.
The driver’s 3-year-old twin boys were in the vehicle during the crash and suffered minor injuries, police said. They were transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Updates on their conditions were not available.
The driver and passengers appeared not to be wearing seat belts, Zuniga said.
