I Tried CRKT's Morphing Axe-and Couldn't Put It Down

The CRKT Provoke X Morphing Axe is one of the most unusual camp tools we've tested all year. Designed around the same Kinematic deployment system that made the original Provoke knife a cult favorite, this folding axe snaps open with a flick of the wrist and looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. After taking it on multiple camping trips, we found it's more than just a clever gimmick-it's a surprisingly capable tool for chopping kindling, trimming branches, and sparking conversations around the campfire.

The Provoke X is the axe version of Joe Caswell's inventive Provoke knife-the one with the folding karambit mechanism that knife nerds lost their minds over a few years back. The axe takes the same idea and scales it up into something that feels equal parts camp tool, tactical gadget, and engineering flex. Push the upper crossbar forward with your thumb and the axe head swings out through a series of articulated arms until it locks into place with an audible snap. No springs, no assisted opening-just beautifully overbuilt mechanical leverage.

Or, to show off and get a little thrill, unlock it with your thumb and give it a good wrist snap to deploy it more dramatically. The first few times you flick it open, you'll do it again immediately just because it's so satisfying. Everyone I handed it to had immediately open it a few times-once they figured out the proper amount of wrist flick needed to snick it out smoothly. Closing it back up does take a bit of time to learn and get your muscle memory firing correctly as the movement required isn't super intuitive-and figuring out how to push the button just right to unlock the contraption also takes some learning.

At 11.73 inches overall and just under 2 pounds, the Provoke X lands somewhere between a traditional hatchet and a packable survival tool-SK-5 carbon steel blade, black oxide finish, machined aluminum scales layered over stainless steel deployment arms. It feels dense, sturdy, and solidly industrial in hand.

Performance-wise, it punches above its size. The head geometry bites aggressively into dry wood, and the heft from the steel linkage system generates decent chopping force despite the shorter handle. Used it on several spring camping trips for kindling, limb trimming, and stake hammering without a single mechanical hiccup.

A fixed-head hatchet is still cheaper and more practical for most people. But the Provoke X isn't competing with hardware-store axes-it's aimed squarely at gear people who appreciate clever engineering and tools that spark conversations around the campfire. Plus it's much easier to slip discreetly into a backpack, no sheath required.
