PG Senior Living celebrates 100th anniversary
PACIFIC GROVE – Pacific Grove Senior Living will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building it occupies with a gala and 1920s-themed party on July 9.
The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. and will include music and a community celebration, marking a century since the building first opened as the Forest Hill Hotel.
Resident Barbara Russek said organizers hope to make the evening memorable for residents, families and guests.
"We're going to have some festivities going on we're hoping to make this special," Russek said.
The Forest Hill Hotel opened in 1926 and was designed by architect George Rushforth in the Mediterranean Revival style. The five-story structure was built for businessman Samuel S. Parsons at a cost of $300,000 and was constructed by the C.L. Wold Company of San Francisco.
Russek said the building was the first hotel in Pacific Grove and remains one of the tallest structures in the city.
"It was the first hotel in PG, and it's five stories high," Russek said.
The hotel was built with a reinforced concrete foundation and included 100 rooms, public and private dining areas, open terraces, lounges and parlors. Public rooms featured Philippine mahogany paneling and tile floors.
According to historical records, the hotel reached full occupancy shortly after opening. Parsons also funded nearby tennis courts as part of the property's development.
The building later became Forest Hill Manor and eventually evolved into what is now Pacific Grove Senior Living.
Russek said the anniversary celebration is intended to recognize both the building's history and the people who call it home today.
"We're excited, we're trying to plan a nice evening and celebrate our home" Russek said.
Russek said she continues to enjoy living at the facility.
"It's a wonderful place to live,” she said, “and I'm happy here."
