A-E Source: Crockett hosts Anza walk and Fourth of July celebration

The Crockett Chamber of Commerce and the Crockett Historical Museum are inviting the community to celebrate 250 Years of freedom and 175 years of California statehood with a Historical Anza Expedition Trail Walk and Fourth of July Celebration that will take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The celebration will also commemorate the 120th anniversary of the C&H sugar refinery in Crockett, which opened in 1906.

The event is free to attend.

"If you're a history buff, this is something to be a part of. It's a nice family event happening early enough in the day," said Norma Black, president of the Crockett Chamber of Commerce. "It's great to be a part of the history we're celebrating, not just the walk. We're celebrating 150 years of C&H and statehood, and we also do have people in town who are descendants of the trail of Juan Bautista."

Guests will gather at Scout Hall on 991 Loring Ave. for snacks and refreshments before taking off on a 30-minute historical walk from 11:30 a.m. until noon.

Guests who have already registered through Eventbrite will receive a complimentary T-shirt.

However, guests can still show up to Scout Hall if they haven't registered through the website.

The Crockett Chamber of Commerce and the Crockett Historical Museum organized the Anza Expedition Walk to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the expedition's journey through California.

Juan Bautista de Anza was a Spanish military officer, politician and explorer.

He is known for opening the first colonial route from Arizona to the coast of California and for leading an expedition of 240 colonists from Arizona to the San Francisco Bay Area to establish a presidio and mission -now known as San Francisco.

The group traveled roughly 1,200 miles.

"Because we had the (Crockett) Historical Museum putting this together, we will be discussing history about Crockett, the C&H factory, and what it was before," said Black. "As we travel through town, we will also discuss the history of the other older buildings."

The expedition's path parallels the modern-day Carquinez Strait Regional Shoreline and merges into the Crockett Hills Regional Park trail network.

Black said walkers will discuss the history of Juan Bautista de Anza as they approach the bridgehead, adjacent to the Carquinez Bridge.

Visitors standing at the bridgehead will hear a reading of a passage recorded from what he said while standing at that spot.

"He could see Benicia and Vallejo, though of course, he didn't know the names of those towns yet. But he'd written that it was all very beautiful and that the Ohlone people were very friendly," said Black.

After the walk, participants will arrive at Rithet Park for the 4th of July celebration. The celebration will feature a car show, pie-eating contest, bocce ball, and a live jazz band performance by Steve Snyder Big Band.

The celebration will last from noon to 3 p.m.

Featured food trucks include the Philleigh Truck, which specializes in Philly cheesesteaks, Charlie's, and SmoothieLicious.

The Crockett Museum will feature an exhibit on C&H Sugar and create a time capsule that will remain sealed until California celebrates its 200th anniversary of statehood.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs and beverages.

"Festivities will end early enough for everyone to spend the rest of their day attending over 4th of July parties and watch the fireworks elsewhere. But during the morning and early afternoon, it's a perfect day for family fun," said Black.
