Breakfast spot with multiple locations wins latest ‘Best of Merced County’ poll
The winner of the Sun-Star’s latest online poll, for best breakfast, came down to the slightest margin. Let’s call it as thin as a slice of bacon.
Jantz Cafe & Bakery, which has locations in Atwater and Merced, edged out Granny’s Pantry in Atwater by one vote in the Sun-Star’s latest Best of Merced County poll.
Jantz Cafe & Bakery finished with 18 votes, garnering 31% of the 58 total votes. Granny’s Pantry received 17 votes, for 28%.
Scotts Diner of Merced finished third with eight votes. Eight other spots received votes.
What makes Jantz Cafe & Bakery popular?
Jantz Cafe & Bakery has two locations in Merced County: 987 Bellvue Road in Atwater and 3361 G St. in Merced. There’s a third location in Mariposa, at 5067 Highway 140.
According to its website, the Jantz family opened its first location in Atwater in 2001. In 2009, it opened its Mariposa location, and in 2013, it opened in Merced.
“Though we have grown through the years, our commitment to quality has not changed,” the website says. “We still believe you can never cut corners on quality.”
According to Yelp, Jantz Cafe & Bakery is especially known for its pies, breads and pastries.
“The best baked goods in Merced hands-down!” one Yelp reviewer said.

Other popular Merced County breakfast spots
Granny’s Pantry, at 1221 Broadway Ave. in Atwater, appears to be properly named. One Yelp reviewer said, “Dining inside definitely feels like grandma’s kitchen.”
“You can easily drive past it if you’re driving through downtown Atwater, but it’s a gem when you find it,” the Yelp reviewer said.
Granny’s Pantry is open daily from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Scotts Diner, at 2015 E. Childs Ave. in Merced, received 14% of the vote. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but it appears the breakfast menu is especially popular.
“Amazing service and delicious food!” one Yelp reviewer said of Scotts Diner.
