Fire burns residence, shop off East Childs Avenue and Brantley Street in Merced

No injuries were reported in a structure fire early Sunday off East Childs Avenue and Brantley Street in Merced.

Cal Fire/Merced County Fire Department responded at 4:45 a.m. to a call about a structure fire at 1076 E. Childs Ave. Firefighters arrived to find an abandoned residence and a shop containing multiple vehicles on fire.

Three Merced County engines, one county water tanker, one City of Merced fire engine and a ladder truck combined to combat the blaze.

The fire was contained shortly before 6 a.m., according to county/Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brian Neely.

The residence, shop and close to a dozen vehicles were destroyed.

The cause remains under investigation.
