McDonald’s McPlant patty is coming to 600 more US stores. Here’s when and where
McDonald’s plant-based burger is set to take root at hundreds more U.S. restaurants this month.
The new McPlant will be available at approximately 600 stores across the San Francisco Bay and Dallas-Fort Worth areas for a limited time starting Feb. 14, McDonald’s announced in a news release.
The fast food chain teamed with meat substitute company Beyond Meat to develop the vegetarian-friendly patty, which is made from “plant-based ingredients like peas, rice and potatoes,” the company said. McDonald’s previously tested the sandwich at eight restaurants in October of last year.
“The McPlant was created to give customers more delicious options in addition to the McDonald’s burger line-up you know and love, with fan favorites like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder sandwich still available nationwide,” the release reads.
The meat-free patty is topped with cheese as well as tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, mustard, mayo and ketchup all on a sesame seed bun. McDonald’s advised that the McPlant is served with “non-plant-based ingredients” and cooked on the same grills as other patties, but guests may “customize and request to hold the cheese and mayonnaise, or any other ingredients.”
The expanded test comes amid a wave of new plant-based options offered at popular fast-food restaurants.
In January, KFC debuted its Beyond Fried Chicken made from plants, McClatchy News reported. The faux fried chicken isn’t considered vegan, however, because it’s cooked in the same fryers as the brand’s classic chicken.
Burger King’s Impossible Whopper, added to U.S. menus in 2019, is marketed as plant-based but not vegan for this same reason, according to the restaurant’s website.
