The U.S. Department of Education released a preview of the one-time student relief debt application Tuesday, allowing borrowers to prepare.
The application is scheduled to be released at some point in October and will be open through Dec. 31, 2023, the White House stated.
There are roughly 4 million Californians who owe money on student loans, according to the state. Collectively, they have about $147 billion in debt — with an average of $38,530, a 2021 report states.
There still is no date for when the application will go live, but here is what we know so far:
The Application
- The student relief form will be short and to the point.
- Supporting documents and FSA ID’s will not be required, you simply need your FASFA login information.
- The application will be available in both English and Spanish.
- The form will be viewable on a desktop or mobile device.
What comes next?
Once you submit your student debit relief form, the rest will be in the hands of U.S. Department of Education. The department will first look over your application and determine how much relief you will receive. Then it will work with your loan creditor to get that sorted out.
