Rescuers saved eight people from a sinking sailboat in San Francisco Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The 30-foot vessel Viking began taking on water near Gashouse Cove at 1:38 p.m. Saturday, May 24, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

Another boat tried to tow the sailboat, which flipped onto its side, the Coast Guard said.

“The nine persons aboard righted the vessel and climbed back aboard,” the agency said.

A Coast Guard vessel arrived and took off eight people, but the captain refused to abandon the sailboat, rescuers said.

Rescuers took the eight others to safety while the Viking flipped back onto its side, the Coast Guard said.

A tow boat towed the vessel to a pier with the captain still aboard, the Coast Guard said.
