Pedestrian struck and killed by train in Planada identified by coroner

A female pedestrian who was struck and killed by a train in Planada on Friday night has been identified as Jovita Velasco, 30, of Merced, according to Merced County Sheriff’s Deputy Daryl Allen.

The incident occurred in the area of Plainsburg Road and Santa Fe Avenue in Planada.

According to authorities, deputies responded just after 8 p.m. Friday to a call from the train conductor of a BNSF Railway train.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine why Velasco was on the train tracks, Allen said.
