Pedestrian struck and killed on dark section of I5 near Los Banos, CHP says
A pedestrian walking within the lanes of Interstate 5 just near Los Banos was struck and killed by a vehicle early morning March 6, according to California Highway Patrol.
The unidentified 30-year-old man was walking south in the northbound lane of I-5 at 4:35 a.m. near Whitworth Road, according to a CHP news release.
Conditions were dark and the pedestrian was within an area closed to pedestrians, the release states.
CHP identified the driver of a 2017 Peterbilt tractor-trailer that struck the man as Delbert Dean Green, 56, of San Bernardino.
He was traveling around 55 mph at the time of the collision. CHP said Green saw the pedestrian walking directly toward him in the second lane and attempted to swerve to the left. He was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian with the right-front corner of his vehicle.
Green stopped his vehicle in the I-5 median. He was reportedly uninjured.
The pedestrian was taken to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, where he died from his injuries. His identity is pending release by the coroner until his family is notified.
Preliminary screenings show drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision, according to CHP. The incident is still being investigated.
