Merced traffic stop leads to 3 arrests, including alleged gang member with gun

A traffic stop led to three arrests, including a gang member for possession of a firearm on Thursday in Merced.

Officers with the Merced Police Gang Violence Suppression Unit stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 1100 block of Canal St. at 6:09 p.m.

Two male juvenile passengers ran from the vehicle and both were apprehended a block away. Police found a 9 mm semi-auto handgun and a high-capacity magazine in the area the suspects ran.

The driver of the vehicle was Robert Yanez, 42, a validated gang member on parole, according to police. Yanez was booked at the Merced County Jail for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, vehicle code violations, gang enhancements and a parole violation.

Both juveniles were booked at the Merced County Juvenile Hall for weapons charges and gang enhancements.
