Merced County moving closer to 100 coronavirus deaths, though hospitalizations decreasing

There were two new reported coronavirus-related deaths in Merced County on Tuesday, bringing the total number of local deaths to 95, the county Public Health Department reported.

There have been seven local deaths reported since Friday.

One of the deaths reported on Tuesday was a male between the age of 50 and 64 and the other was a female over 65 years old. It was unknown whether either had underlying health conditions.

The Department of Public Health reported 130 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, which brings the total of number residents who have contracted the virus to 7,171 since the start of the pandemic.

Department of Public Health estimates there are 2,591 county residents considered active with the virus.

On a positive note, the number of local people hospitalized by the virus, at the moment, appears to be trending downward.

The number of Merced County residents currently hospitalized dropped from 91 to 83 from Monday to Tuesday. Among those patients, those being cared for in Merced County hospitals dropped from 40 to 36.

A total of 461 people from Merced County have been hospitalized due to the virus since the start of the pandemic.

Elsewhere in the Valley

Stanislaus County announced Monday 200 residents have died from COVID-19. As of Monday, 12,668 people have tested positive, up 128 from Sunday. Another 64,608 have tested negative, and 11,342 are presumed recovered.

Fresno County added 306 new cases on Tuesday, the California Department of Public Health reported, bringing the county’s total case count to 21,316.

Tulare County reported 267 new cases for a total of 12,718 cases since the start of the pandemic. Tulare County has 206 deaths due to COVID-19.

Kings County has had 5,543 cases, 66 deaths,and 3,183 recovered from the virus. Kings County did not report any new information on Tuesday.

Madera County reported 67 new cases, which brings the total number of cases to 3,196 since the start of the pandemic. There have been 47 deaths and 2,370 recoveries.

Mariposa County reported one new coronavirus case to bring the county’s total to 65 people who have suffered from the virus. There has been one death and 61 recoveries.
