Merced County Coroner identifies pedestrian struck and killed by vehicle in Winton
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified a pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle in Winton on Dec. 27, as 41-year-old Juan Macias, according to Deputy Daryl Allen.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Macias was pushing a shopping cart across Almond Avenue between Cypress Avenue and North Winton Way around 6:30 a.m., when he was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado driving eastbound at about 25 mph.
Authorities said it appears the driver didn’t see Macias who was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision in the rain and in an area with low lighting. The CHP said it was determined the right front of the vehicle impacted the man who came to rest on the south edge of Almond Avenue near a Frank Sparkes Elementary School driveway.
According to the CHP, officers attempted life saving measures but Macias died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with officers. According to the CHP, neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the collision.
