All signs indicate that a longtime ask by the Merced community could soon be delivered, as initial steps to open a Sprouts Farmers Market take shape.

City of Merced officials on Tuesday confirmed they have received a building permit application for a Sprouts Farmers Market at the Yosemite Crossing site, located at the corner of Yosemite Avenue and G Street near Merced College.

The natural foods-geared grocery store checks boxes that many residents have asked be filled by bringing a Sprouts Farmers Market, or alternatively a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, to Merced. The shop specializes in providing affordable fresh, organic goods at more than 307 stores, according to the company’s website.

Project developers were not immediately available to comment on the timeline or other specifics associated with the plan.

The grocery store is joined by the likes of new Habit Burger Grill, Crumbl Cookies, West Coast Sourdough, Starbucks and Panda Express locations developing at Yosemite Crossing.

City leaders have lauded the project for attracting several businesses that residents have wanted to see locally for some time, but had to travel elsewhere to find. Securing those businesses now indicates the Merced is on a path of positive momentum, officials say.

“I think the Yosemite Crossing shopping center is a demonstration of the next level retail coming to the city,” Deputy City Manager Frank Quintero told the Sun-Star.

The 21.5-acre Yosemite Crossing site is also slated to add two medical and dental office buildings, a hotel, multi-family residential housing and other retail space to the city’s north side. Other features are expected to include a gas station, bank, day care and fast food and family-style restaurants.
