Will trash pickup in Merced be delayed on Christmas? Here’s the holiday schedule

In celebration of the holidays, Merced-area businesses and services — from grocery stores to government offices — are closing on select days or switching to special hours.

What does that mean for garbage collection? Will Christmas Eve and Christmas Day delay trash pickup in Merced?

Here’s what to keep in mind:

Which holidays will delay trash pickup in Merced?

According to the city of Merced, certain holidays can delay garbage pickup.

Merced County Regional Waste Authority operates two local landfills: Billy Wright Landfill, 17173 South Billy Wright Road in Los Banos, and Highway 59 Landfill, 7040 North Highway 59 in Merced.

According to the county agency, the landfills are closed on Sundays and the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

“When the landfill is closed for a holiday, refuse service will be delayed one business day following the holiday,” the city said on its website.

What about other Merced County communities?

Mid Valley Disposal provides trash, recycling and organic waste services for the cities of Atwater, Dos Palos, Gustine and Los Banos, according to Merced County Regional Waste Authority.

Mid Valley Disposal is closed on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

“If one of these holidays fall on Monday through Friday, collection services will be delayed one day the remainder of the week,” the waste collection company said.

Gilton Solid Waste Management, which serves Livingston residents, observes a total of five holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter
  • Independence Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

“Holidays that land on a weekday push our residential and commercial pickup schedules back one day with regular schedules resuming the following week,” the company said.

Waste Management Inc. provides garbage collection services for unincorporated areas of Merced County, including Ballico, Cressey, Delhi, Santa Nella and Winton.

The waste collection company closes for a number of holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

When the holiday falls on a weekday, collections for the rest of the week are pushed back by a day.

How will Christmas affect garbage collection in 2024?

In 2024, Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday.

If Tuesday is your normal trash pickup day, you won’t see any changes on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.

However, people who would normally have their trash cans collected on Wednesday won’t see the garbage truck on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

Instead, trash pickup for those customers will be rescheduled for Thursday, Dec 26.

Folks who normally have trash picked up on Thursday will see their garbage collection day moved to Friday, Dec 27.

For customers with a Friday trash pickup day, garbage collection will be rescheduled for Saturday, Dec 28.
