Two people were killed Sunday night following a crash in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened just after 11 p.m. on Highway 59, south of Washington Road.

CHP said a 28-year-old woman from Atwater was driving a 2019 Toyota Camry southbound on Highway 59, south of Washington Road. A 29-year-old San Jose man was driving a 2016 Toyota Camry northbound on Highway 59.

For unknown reasons, Susana Esquivel allowed her Camry to traverse to the left, across the painted broken center line and entered the northbound lane directly in the path of the other driver, identified as Tyler Jackson.

Esquivel and Jackson were pronounced dead.

The crash is under investigation.
