Will garbage pickup in Merced be delayed on Thanksgiving? See holiday schedule

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 27.

Whether you’re hitting the road, running errands or spending the day roasting a turkey, several Merced-area businesses and services — including government offices — will be closed or observing limited hours for the holiday.

What does that mean for garbage collection? Will Thanksgiving delay trash pickup in Merced?

Here’s what to know:

When is my scheduled trash pickup day in Merced?

Trash pickup in Merced varies depending on where you live.

“The city of Merced provides both residential and commercial refuse service,” the city said on its website.

This includes regular garbage, recycling, yard waste, organic waste and construction debris.

Collections occur on your scheduled day each week.

Will garbage pickup in Merced be delayed on Thanksgiving?

According to the city of Merced’s website, certain holidays can delay garbage pickup.

Local haulers observe nine holidays each year:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

In 2025, Thanksgiving — Thursday, Nov. 27 — will delay trash pickup for Merced residents.

“When the landfill is closed for a holiday, refuse service will be delayed one business day following the holiday,” the city said on its website.

If your usual pickup day falls on Thanksgiving, which is a Thursday, collection will shift to Friday. Nov. 28.

Will garbage pickup be delayed in Merced County?

In 2025, Thanksgiving — Thursday, Nov. 27 — will delay trash pickup for residents of incorporated and unincorporated areas of Merced County.

Cities surrounding Merced, including Atwater, Dos Palos, Gustine and Los Banos are serviced by Mid Valley Disposal.

The company provides trash, recycling and organic waste services.

Mid Valley Disposal is closed on several holidays, including Thanksgiving.

“If one of these holidays fall on Monday through Friday, collection services will be delayed one day the remainder of the week,” the waste collection company said on its website.

Waste Management Inc. provides garbage collection for unincorporated areas of Merced County, including Ballico, Cressey, Delhi, Santa Nella and Winton.

The company closes for several holidays, including Thanksgiving.

When a holiday falls on a weekday, the company said, collections for the remainder of the week are delayed by one day.

Gilton Solid Waste Management — which serves residents of Livingston — observes the following five holidays each year:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter
  • Independence Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas

“Holidays that land on a weekday push our residential and commercial pickup schedules back one day with regular schedules resuming the following week,” the company said.
