Merced’s Applegate Zoo is closing for three months. Here’s why

The California black bears at Merced’s Applegate Zoo are getting time to hibernate while they get some new digs.

The zoo recently announced it will be closed from Jan. 1 to April 2 for major renovations, according to the City of Merced Parks and Recreation.

The zoo will build a new black bear exhibit, improve walking paths and update the entry to the gift shop, according to a Merced Parks and Recreation Facebook post.

“We know closures can be inconvenient, but this investment means a better, more engaging zoo for our animals, guests and community for years to come,” the post said.

Applegate Zoo was established in 1962. Its population is about 75 Native California mammals, birds, and reptiles. Most of them come from wildlife rescue centers, according to the city of Merced website. The zoo is at 1045 W. 25th St. in Merced.
