Merced’s Applegate Zoo is ready to reopen. Here’s when and what has changed
Merced residents will finally get a chance this month to see the upgraded Applegate Zoo.
The zoo announced Wednesday in a Facebook post that it will hold a grand reopening on July 24.
The zoo has been closed since Jan. 1 for major renovations. It was scheduled to reopen in April but had to be moved back to May. Then it was moved back again.
“Hope to see you there and thank you for your patience!” the zoo’s post said.
In January, the zoo said it was building a new black bear exhibit, improving walking paths and updating the entry to the gift shop. Wednesday’s post said the zoo also upgraded its bobcat exhibit.
Applegate Zoo was established in 1962. Its population is about 75 native California mammals, birds and reptiles. Most of them come from wildlife rescue centers, according to the city of Merced.
The zoo is at 1045 W. 25th St. Ticket prices, hours and other information are available on the city’s website at www.cityofmerced.gov/parks-and-community/applegate-park-zoo.
